Kenta Maeda takes the mound for the Dodgers tonight, hoping to help them avoid a mile-high sweep. This will be Maeda’s second Major League start at Coors Field. His first was one of his finest pitching performances of the year. On April 23rd, Maeda delivered six and one-third shutout innings in Colorado, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Maeda had another very good outing against Colorado in Los Angeles in June, allowing just one run through six and two-thirds innings. However, the Dodgers offense couldn’t muster anything to support him in that game.

Tyler Chatwood gets the ball for the Rockies. After 19 starts and 110 2/3 IP, Chatwood has a 3.50 ERA (4.22 FIP) and a 1.35 WHIP. Chatwood doesn’t strike out many (15.1% K rate, 5.69 K/9) and walks a fair number of batters (10.8% BB rate, 4.07 BB/9), resulting in a K-BB% of 4.3%, one of the worst such marks baseball. The Rockies are 12-7 in his starts.

Chatwood has faced the Dodgers twice this season. The first was that same game started by Maeda in Colorado, wherein Chatwood did not fare as well, as he allowed three runs in four innings of work. The second time was at Dodger Stadium. Then, he pitched 8 innings of one-run ball, allowing just one hit while walking four and striking out five.

In today’s roster news:

Grant Dayton had an impressive Major League debut on July 22nd, striking out two in two shutout innings against the Cardinals in what ended up being a 16-inning loss for the Dodgers. He was then optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he has since made three relief appearances, including one last night (one inning, one strikeout).

In today’s rotation news:

I don’t know, man. Everything is a mess.
