Podcast: ‘Dugout Blues’ episode 191 – Opening day, predictions, prospects

On this episode of “Dugout Blues,” Jared Massey (Dodger Blue) and I are very excited for the start of the 2017 season.

The final roster spots were determined, and there weren’t a ton of big surprises. It was exciting to see Hyun-Jin Ryu earn a rotation spot, but it’s also wise to be cautious about his chances to stick there the entire season. Enrique Hernandez beat out Chris Taylor for the last roster spot — a backup infielder/outfielder spot — while Scott Van Slyke bested Trayce Thompson. It’s probably better for Thompson to get more regular playing time in the minors, especially after missing so much time last season. Hernandez over Taylor isn’t that big a deal, but Taylor is the better overall player at this rate. Hernandez has more “boom” potential. It’s like ‘tevs.

We made our predictions for the 2017 season. My predictions are on paper over at FanGraphs. If you want to hear who I picked for both managers of the year and the World Series participants and winner, then listen in, as the answer might surprise you. But here’s a spoiler: I chose Clayton Kershaw to win the NL Cy Young Award. Big shock there.

Jared finished up his Top 50 prospects list. It’s completely wrong down to the last ranking. He’s basically Aaron Burr — the worst.

To close we had a strong Q&A session to open the ’17 season. Please keep them coming.
