Rockies @ Dodgers June 22, 2019: Lambert vs. Ryu

The Dodgers (52-25) won in spectacular fashion last night, behind an overpowering Walker Buehler start and a Matt Beaty walk off. The Rockies face a potentially tougher task with Hyun-Jin Ryu on the mound, against their 22 year-old Peter Lambert.

This lineup is pretty standard with the Dodgers facing a right-handed starter. Most notably, Justin Turner should be available all game instead of the two plate appearances he had yesterday before he was confusingly ejected. Additionally, Joc Pederson is getting just his second start at first base with last night’s hero Matt Beaty starting in left field.

Hyun-Jin Ryu has been fantastic. Of 112 starters with at least 60 innings pitched, here’s where Ryu sits — first in ERA at an astonishing 1.26. Mike Soroka has given up eight runs over his last 11 innings, dropping him down to a 2.12 ERA which is…second in the league. Ryu is second in FIP at 2.52 and WHIP at 0.82. His 1.4% walk-rate is the lowest in baseball with just five walks allowed over his 93 innings. Over the last 20 years, there have been 1,739 qualified seasons by individual pitchers and Ryu’s current 1.4% walk-rate would be second to only Carlos Silva (1.2%) in 2005. This pitching matchup is obviously favoring Ryu and the Dodgers.

Peter Lambert is making just his fourth start in the MLB, with a 6.00 ERA, 3.60 FIP, and a 1.27 WHIP over his first 15 innings. Before his promotion, the 22 year-old right hander was rated the second best prospect on the Rockies and 117 overall by FanGraphs. He sits 92-94 with his fastball, mixing in a solid curve and changeup. He had allowed just two runs on seven hits over his first two starts before a brutal outing last week against the Padres. He went just three innings, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs. It’s obviously unlikely he’ll get destroyed like that again, but facing the Dodgers offense should be a tough task for the rookie.

Not a ton of other news has popped up since the game last night, so check out the recap from last night again to see Buehler absolutely shove.

Also, check out the Women’s World Cup. The games have been great, and if you’re rooting for the United States team, they’re elite, compared to the men’s team that missed the 2018 World Cup.

First pitch is at 4:15 PT on FOX.
