OOTP 21: June 9, 2020 – Dodgers 5, Reds 4 – Will Smith powers dramatic win

While Walker Buehler wasn’t at his best, the Dodgers staged a dramatic three-run rally in the 9th to pull off a comeback win over the Reds, 5-4.

Catcher Will Smith provided the key blow in the 9th, smashing a two-run ding dong to right field for a 4-3 lead. “Nice to see our side come away with the win,” Smith said after the game. You’d think he’d be more excited.

Jesse Winker was the key man on offense for the Reds as he gave them an early lead in the 1st with a two-run shot off Buehler. The Reds pushed another run across the board in the 5th, and Buehler ended up surrendering those three runs in just six innings. He struck out five and only gave up four hits, but walked three. Certainly not his best work.

Blake Treinen was a bit of a mess in relief, walking two and allowing a single in his inning, but managing to not give up a run. Caleb Ferguson then followed with a 1-2-3 frame to keep the Dodgers within striking distance before the explosive final frame.

While the Dodgers managed to tie the game in the 2nd off Luis Castillo with runs in back-to-back innings, they then remained scoreless against the Reds staff until the 9th. Smith then provided the aforementioned go-ahead dinger off Raisel Iglesias, but it was actually Tyler White‘s homer later in the inning that provided the winning run.

That’s because Kenley Jansen struggled again, giving up a homer to Nick Senzel to cut the lead to one. He also allowed a single and a walk to put the game in further danger, but thankfully induced a double play to end the game and escape with a win.

The Dodgers are now 38-28 on the season, and Julio Urias will face off against Trevor Bauer tomorrow.
