2014 MLB Draft open thread: Tyler Kolek at 2?

2014 MLB Draft logoHappy 2014 MLB Draft! It’s finally here, and the Marlins already surprised folks by opting for hard-throwing prep right-hander Tyler Kolek out of Texas.

The Dodgers pick at No. 22. Some of the names most connected to them are Spencer Adams, Derek Hill, Foster Griffin and Nick Howard. I profiled the first three.

This is how I’d handicap the Dodgers’ likeliest selection at this point:

1. Spencer Adams
2. Derek Hill
3. Foster Griffin
4. Nick Howard
5. Luis Ortiz

Here’s some additional information that you might find handy:

My Big Board, v 3.0 (10 profiles linked in this piece)
History of the No. 22 pick
Slot recommended bonus (No. 22): $1,980,500
Total draft bonus pool: $4,974,700
– Amount the Dodgers can spend (plus 5 percent) on their first 10 picks

Keith Law is insistent that the Dodgers are going to take a college player, and he’s mocked Virginia outfielder Derek Fisher to them twice in the last few days. Howard, Fisher’s teammate, could also be a college guy the Dodgers are interested in. I’d be disappointed with both.
