Quick game thread today.

The big news is that Yasiel Puig is out of the lineup, again, with a sore hamstring. Puig looked outstanding at the plate last night, but whenever he had to run he was limping. After his double, it looked like he was ready to come out of the game. He didn’t, but he’s sitting today. This is pretty annoying, because if Puig does have to head to the disabled list, the Dodgers just lost a few potentially unnecessary games. I was hoping that the new front office would take us past issues like this.

Carl Crawford is still sick, so Scott Van Slyke gets the start in left, while Ethier fills in for Puig in right. Having outfield depth is pretty nice for situations like these. Speaking of depth, Justin Turner gets the start at third base, with Juan Uribe getting a day off. Why not Alex Guerrero? It’s tough to say for sure, but Turner only has four plate appearances since hurting his finger last week. They both need to play.

A.J. Ellis gets the chance to catch Brandon McCarthy today. McCarthy has been super weird so far, but in a way which I find encouraging. The home runs aren’t great, but there is absolutely no way a 50% HR/FB ratio continues. McCarthy’s 14.9% swinging strike rate, almost double what he managed last season, probably won’t stick either, but does show that he is missing a lot of bats. That is something McCarthy hasn’t done very well in the past, so it’ll be interesting to see to what degree this continues.

Hyun-jin Ryu is now playing long toss. He still hasn’t thrown off a mound, which doesn’t bode well for a return any time soon. It still looks like the Dodgers will use a fifth starter on Wednesday. At this point, it’ll either be Mike Bolsinger or Zach Lee, since Joe Wieland pitched today. Either of those options will be fun.

Buster Olney passes along that the Dodgers may be open to sign a contract extension with Howie Kendrick. Yes please.
