Alex Guerrero lives!
For the first time since 1987 (probably) he’s in the starting lineup, hitting sixth tonight in left. (We should probably just give up on him ever playing third again; Wednesday marks a full month since the last time we saw him there, and it’s not like hot corner playing time is going to get easier to come by when Hector Olivera arrives.)
When Guerrero has played lately, he’s had a tough time getting on base, though he’s still shown power. That leads to the following fun example of “two different ways to get to the exact same place,” which in this case is a nearly identical wRC+ over the last 30 days for Guerrero (124) and Yasmani Grandal (125):
Guerrero: .245/.269/.551
Grandal: .234/.347/.438
Why, though, against a righty? It’s because Andre Ethier is “tired,” per Don Mattingly:
Don Mattingly said Andre Ethier has looked a little tired lately. Not starting today, won't start Monday vs LHP Tsuyoshi Wada
— Eric Stephen (@ericstephen) June 21, 2015
Which is fine. Ethier’s played a ton. Guerrero needs time. Scott Van Slyke (presumably starting tomorrow against lefty Tsuyoshi Wada) needs time. But it also means that a national audience on ESPN tonight is going to be treated to the spectacle that is Guerrero playing left field. So… keep an eye out for hilarity?
