Gavin Lux is mounting quite an impressive Rookie Of The Year campaign, starring in yet another game, this time going 3-for-5 with a dinger to lead the Dodgers to a 9-0 blowout win over the Royals.
Lux ended up driving in five runs and scoring three, helping Alex Wood coast to a much-needed victory.
After Joc Pederson hit his 12th dinger earlier in the 2nd, Gavin blew the game open, smashing a change-up from Jorge Lopez for a grand slam to make it 5-0. Lux already has seven homers on the year and is now hitting .329.
“Gavin is still learning,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “The sky’s the limit for him.“
Wow, a rather realistic quote. Computers really are gonna take over the world.
Despite the early fireworks, perhaps the most impactful outing of the day belonged to Wood. Struggling something mighty coming into the start, as proven by the fact that his ERA is still 6.70 after today, he was in danger of losing his rotation spot. Well, he managed to come up big for himself, going eight shutout innings on 106 pitches, scattering five hits and a two walks while striking out five.
For better or worse, Wood has likely bought himself a couple more starts even though there’s likely starter depth toiling in the minors that could be doing better.
Despite the win, the Dodgers are only on a 92-win pace, which is still below expectations. The series will conclude tomorrow with Walker Buehler taking the hill against Brad Keller.
