Well … looks like we’re into the dead period in the baseball news cycle, which means it’s time for a news roundup.

The Dodgers have signed pitcher Tyler Cyr to a minor-league deal with an invite to big league camp.
Cyr will enter his age-30 season and made the majors last year with the Phillies and A’s. He threw 13.1 innings and gave up four runs, striking out an impressive 16 while walking just five. While it still seems like an odd choice for pen depth, as Josh notes, there’s qualities there the Dodgers were likely looking at.
Hitters indeed didn’t look comfortable against his fastball.
That said, he does have a 3.73 ERA in three AAA seasons over 79.2 innings, including almost 11 K/9 but over 5 BB/9, so they’re obviously hoping he’s found something recently.

Speaking of pen depth, the Dodgers also signed Tayler Scott to a minor-league deal. Entering his age-31 season next year, Scott pitched in only 12 inning for the Padres last year, giving up nine earned runs (10 runs), striking out 13 and walking six.
While he seemed to struggle in AAA last year, posting a 4.53 ERA, he also struck out 11.5 per nine and walked just 3.1 per nine. He was also in Japan for 2020 and 2021, but spent most of his time there in the minors.

In non-roster related news, Chris Woodward has returned as a special assistant in the front office.
He always seemed to do well as a coach on the staff, so even if he was rather annoying as a manager of the Rangers, this is a welcome return.

In a bit of surprise broadcasting news, Stephen Nelson has joined the Dodgers team and will call games when Joe Davis is out becoming FOX’s star play-by-play guy.
