The Dodgers are set to promote top shortstop prospect Alex Freeland to the major leagues, according to a report from The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya. The LA Times’ Jack Harris added that Freeland will be in Cincinnati on Tuesday in case Tommy Edman or Hyeseong Kim needs to go on the injured list, which would open up his roster spot.
Freeland has moved steadily up prospect lists with strong performance over the last two seasons. A third round pick in 2022, he broke out in 2024 and is now ranked as the No. 35 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. Freeland was ranked seventh in the Dodgers system on my preseason prospects list. He’s a low-risk, high-floor type of player that should stick around for a while once he has a path to consistent playing time.
A quality all-around contributor, Freeland makes an impact all over the field with strong traits in multiple areas. He is a quality defender at shortstop and the rest of the infield. The Dodgers have played him at third base lately in preparation for a potential call-up. He has also stolen 81 bases in 344 minor league games.

The 23-year-old is patient at the plate as his 16.6% walk rate has helped Freeland post a .799 OPS in Triple-A this year. He accelerated from High-A Great Lakes all the way to Oklahoma City last season, posting an .829 OPS across the three levels.
Freeland’s glove and plate discipline are his biggest strengths, but another one is simply his overall lack of weaknesses. He grades out at roughly average or better across all five tools. The Kentucky native has struck out at a manageable 22% clip this season alongside 12 home runs and 17 stolen bases.
The switch-hitter is better from the left side but still holds his own against southpaws. He is coming off a series in Reno in which Freeland launched a pair of home runs and drove in nine across six games. Additionally, he walked six times compared to four strikeouts, so Freeland will look to keep his bat hot if it is indeed time for his MLB debut.

Should Freeland get added to the roster, he will likely play a good chunk of his innings at third base as Max Muncy remains on the injured list. While he’s played much more shortstop than anything else, Freeland has moved over the third base for most of his playing time since Muncy went down. He also has experience at the keystone in his career, making a utility infield role a possibility.
The Dodgers promoting Freeland, especially if it means one of Edman or Kim are heading to the injured list, would likely mean he sees the field on a consistent basis. Muncy is starting a rehab assignment in Triple-A Tuesday (ironically taking Freeland’s position at third base), so it remains to be seen if Freeland will stay up in the majors after Muncy’s return.
