Dodgers sign Max Muncy to 1-year, $10 million contract extension + 2027 option

Everyone’s favorite rectangular human (or wolf, apparently) Max Muncy agreed to a 1-year contract extension for $10 million and a club option for $10 million in 2028.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to terms with IF Max Muncy on a one-year contract extension for $10 million guaranteed, which includes a $7 million salary for the 2027 season and a $10 million club option for 2028.

Muncy has agreed to relatively team-friendly deals with the Dodgers dating back to when he was still arbitration-eligible. Here are the last three contracts he has signed with LA:

• 3 years, $26 million (bought out final arbitration year)
• 1 year, $13.5 million + $10 million club option
• 2 years, $24 million + $10 million club option

Now, he adds another 8-figure pact to his ledger.

Muncy has turned into quite the bargain of a ballplayer, seeing as he was the best hitting third baseman in baseball last season and has been in the Top 5 since he came to the Dodgers in 2018. His defense has been up and down, but he was never going to be Adrian Beltre, defensively, at the hot corner. Then again, Muncy has done everything the Dodgers have asked of him, defensively, from playing first base (and suffering a terrible injury that massively hindered the 2021 postseason run) to playing second base, a position at which he had all of 112 minor-league innings before he came to Los Angeles. He has probably left some money on the table, but I’d probably take a bit of a discount to play with a perennial World Series contender and with the organization that “fixed” me.

Muncy has been one of the more unsung performers in baseball, and he has had his moments in October as well.

This one just happens to be his most recent moment.

Assuming he doesn’t completely crater in 2026, the contract will take him through his age-36 season. The Dodgers don’t have a ton of third base depth in the minor leagues, so he’ll likely see the lion’s share of playing time there through next season. After that, well, who are we kidding? The Dodgers will probably sign him to another 1+1 deal before the 2027 season (you know, after the lockout ends). He’ll be a Dodger for the rest of his career — just the way it should be.
