The Dodgers (61-44) got off to a quick start against Garrett Crochet last night, putting up two runs on Boston’s ace in the top of the first inning via Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernández solo homers. Unfortunately, any future opportunities the Dodgers had to put up runs were stifled by either Crochet, or baserunning miscues. Chad’s recap covered most of it, but once Boston (56-50) took the lead, they never looked back. Two pitchers who have struggled this season will take the mound in the series finale, Dustin May and Walker Buehler.

Here’s how Buehler and May have fared.
May has been streaky this year, but had success in his first bulk-relief outing his last time out against the Twins. He earned the win, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. It wasn’t necessarily an outing that instilled a ton of confidence, but he was effective enough at generating outs. Somehow, that was his first scoreless outing since his season debut April 1 against the Braves. He had a 6.05 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP over his previous seven starts and 38.2 innings, so maybe that bulk-relief outing will have acted as a sort of reset for him. Separately, there have been some trade rumors surrounding May, and as the trade deadline is just four days away, there is the possibility this is the last time we see May in Dodger blue.
Buehler has had a very poor season in his first year away from the Dodgers, without many positives to take from his year thus far. He has been pitching well as of late, which maybe is a sign that he’s been able to right the ship a bit. His last time out against the Phillies, he allowed just one earned run on six hits and one walk over seven innings. It was his second straight quality start, and just his sixth of the season. His recent stretch has seen him allow just six earned runs over his previous three starts and 18.0 innings, good for a 3.00 ERA, 4.31 FIP, and a 1.28 WHIP, albeit with just eight strikeouts over that stretch.

In other news, the Dodgers made a couple bullpen moves. Blake Treinen and Justin Wrobleski are up, with Will Klein and Edgardo Henriquez sent down.
The Dodgers activated RHP Blake Treinen, recalled LHP Justin Wrobleski and optioned RHPs Will Klein and Edgardo Henriquez.

Wrobleski was scratched from his AAA start on Friday and joins the bullpen as long relief. Treinen returns after missing more than three months with a forearm issue.
In other injury news, Blake Snell‘s expected to join the rotation for his next turn.
Some updates this morning from Dave Roberts:
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 27, 2025
– Blake Snell’s expected to rejoin the rotation next turn.
– Dodgers will go six-man rotation, with Shohei Ohtani going the next two Wednesdays.
– They’ll “manage” Hyeseong Kim’s shoulder. Expected in the lineup tomorrow.
Snell went full Snell in his final rehab start yesterday. He threw 4 2/3 hitless innings with seven strikeouts, but issued four walks and needed 76 pitches to record those 14 outs. He’s lineup up to make his return when the Dodgers play in Tampa next week. His return gives the Dodgers a six-man rotation, and Ohtani is expected to start the next two Wednesdays.
