Dodgers @ Diamondbacks September 25, 2025: Dodgers get their first chance to clinch the NL West for the 12th time in 13 years

The Dodgers (89-69) survived another bullpen implosion, as Alex Vesia and Edgardo Henriquez struggled to spoil a strong Blake Snell start and an insane Roki Sasaki inning of relief. Clayton Kershaw also had a strong inning of relief and Jack Dreyer/Blake Treinen survived the 10th despite two Dreyer walks. Tommy Edman gave them the lead in the 11th, and Justin Wrobleski struck out two in a perfect 11th to give the Dodgers their 89th win and shrink the magic number down to one. The Padres are off today, so the only way for the Dodgers to clinch today is a win in the finale against the Diamondbacks. They’re still sitting pretty if they lose, as any combination of one win over the Mariners this weekend/a Padre loss against the Diamondbacks gives the Dodgers the division. The Phillies also wrapped up the two-seed in the NL, so a win today means nothing is at stake for the Dodgers this weekend in Seattle.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets his final tuneup before the postseason. He’s put together a season that’ll likely garner him some Cy Young votes, with a 2.58 ERA in 167 2/3 innings over his first 29 starts. He’ll be the first Dodger starter to make 30 starts in a season since Julio [redacted] in 2022. Yama’s been excellent of late, allowing exactly one hit in each of his last three start. Naturally, the Dodgers are 1-2 in Yamamoto’s last three despite him allowing three hits, two runs and 27 strikeouts to nine walks in 21 innings. He did struggle a bit against the Giants last time out despite allowing one hit and no runs. He issued six walks and needed 108 pitches to get through 5 1/3. This will be Yamamoto’s fourth time seeing Arizona this season and his second time in Arizona. His two starts in LA went great, combining for 14 innings and five hits, one run, 19 strikeouts and two walks issued. His start in the desert was his first bad start of the season. Back in early May, Arizona put up six hits and five runs in five innings off Yamamoto, after he’d only allowed four runs in the seven starts he had before that.

Zac Gallen was originally slated to start today, but the Diamondbacks pushed him back to tomorrow and will go with a bullpen game today. Jalen Beeks draws the start and he’s been kind of insane since the beginning of July. He missed some time with a back issue but in his last 18 1/3 innings over 21 outing, he’s allowed 10 hits and three runs with four of those hits and two of those runs coming at Coors. He replaced John Curtiss with two outs in the seventh inning of the first game of this series and struck out Shohei Ohtani. He’s thrown 4 2/3 shutout innings against the Dodgers this season over six games and has allowed three hits and six strikeouts. He’s completed two innings twice this season and has maxed out at 35 pitches. Old friend Nabil Crismatt is expected to pitch a bulk of this game. He has a 2.61 ERA in 31 innings over seven outings this season. He’s gone four or more innings in six of his seven outings, and last pitched on September 21, where he only threw one inning against the Phillies. He’s thrown 80+ pitches in four of his seven outings.

Dalton Rushing gets the start behind the plate today. Max Muncy gets the day off with Enrique Hernandez starting at third and Miguel Rojas starts at second.

Not many updates before the early game, but they need to wrap this up so they can give up all the homers to Cal Raleigh this weekend.

First pitch is scheduled for 12:40 PM PT and will be on SportsNet LA.

I've been writing about the Dodgers since I graduated from Long Beach State, where I covered the Dirtbags in my senior year. I'm either very good or very bad at puns.
