Giants 6, Dodgers 2: Other team hits, the Dodgers don’t again

The Dodgers dropped their fourth game in a row after Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up three homers to the bottom of the Giants order, Blake Treinen completed the implosion, and even Shohei Ohtani homering couldn’t get the offense going again in a 6-2 loss.

======

Things started promisingly against Adrian Houser, as Shohei Ohtani led off with a single, Freddie Freeman added a single with one out, and Kyle Tucker got hit by a pitch to load things up. Will Smith then hit a ball hard to right, but it was caught on the track for only a sac fly to make it 1-0 Dodgers.

That was all they would get, because of course.

On the other end, Yoshinobu Yamamoto seemed to be absolutely cruising, retiring the first eight Giants hitters he faced … then backup catcher and nine-hole hitter Eric Haase hit a homer to tie the game at 1-1.

After a quiet 2nd for Houser, Shohei led off the 3rd with his seventh homer to make it 2-1 Dodgers.

If only that was a sign of thing to come.

On the other side, Yamamoto resumed, giving up only a single in the next seven batters. However, it was the bottom of the order again in the 5th, with Harrison Bader and Haase going back-to-back to make it 3-2 Giants.

The Giants #8 and #9 hitters now have three solo homers.

Yamamoto then retired the next four, but in the 7th he ran into trouble with a lead-off double and a single to corner things. After a lineout, Blake Treinen entered and a safety squeeze by Drew Gilbert led to an infield single and a run when Freddie couldn’t bend over.

After Treinen got the second out, Jung-Hoo Lee doubled to plate both runners to make it 6-2 Giants.

That was basically game.

Edgardo Henriquez got a scoreless 8th, and Jack Dreyer got a scoreless 9th. Great.

——

It was game because the offense was the offense.

A quiet 4th was followed by a 5th where a walk was erased by a double play, and Houser sandwiched a walk between two outs in the 6th, and then their pen entered. They kept the Dodgers scoreless the rest of the way despite a chance with the bases loaded and one out in the 8th … of course. Nothing in the 9th either, which is just as well.

24-17, four in a row. Terrible.

The series continues tomorrow at 4:10 PM HT/7:10 PM PT/10:10 PM ET with Shohei Ohtani on the mound against Robbie Ray.
