Dodgers 6, Reds 3: Sheehan ties career-high with 10 Ks, Teoscar continues torrid stretch

After back-to-back thrilling comeback wins to secure a sweep, the Dodgers did things a bit more comfortably tonight, getting ahead thanks to some miscues from the Reds and getting comfort through a Teoscar Hernandez three-run shot. That was enough for Emmet Sheehan, who came back and tied a career-high in strikeouts, in a 6-3 win over the Reds that makes it five straight wins.

Returning to the team and rotation was Emmet Sheehan, who started the game with a three-pitch strikeout, but then saw his fourth pitch crushed to center by Elly De La Cruz for a homer to open the scoring. 1-0 Reds.

That was the bad news. The good news? Sheehan then retired the next 14 batters he faced and looked dominant doing it, only getting help from a Tommy Edman gem.

The 6th got a bit messy for him as a lead-off single ended his streak, and another single with one down cornered things up. However, he got a huge strikeout of Elly, then issued an unintentional intentional walk that loaded the bases.

Dave Roberts then came to get him with Alex Vesia for a lefty-lefty matchup, and Vesia responded with a punchout.

Huge return outing for Sheehan, in which he matched his career-high in strikeouts: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K, 82 Pitches.

Surprisingly, he actually ended up exiting with the lead. A surprise because the offense wasn’t providing him with much help early on against Chase Burns. Thankfully, he went just three innings as the Reds managed his pitch count, but a lead-off walk in the 2nd was his only baserunner.

Brandon Williamson entered in the 4th and started with a clean frame, but ran into some unlucky trouble in the 5th. A lead-off single to Teoscar Hernandez got to second with a one-out steal, and with two down Alex Call got hit on the foot on an 0-2 count. Miguel Rojas then entered and hit for Alex Freeland, hitting a high bouncer that Ke’Bryan Hayes threw low for a three-base error. 2-1 Dodgers just like that.

More trouble followed in the 6th, as Freddie Freeman drew a lead-off walk, stole second with one out, and Max Muncy drew another walk to put a pair on. The red hot Teoscar Hernandez stepped up and stayed that way with his 13th dong of the year for a three-run shot that made it 5-1 Dodgers.

Continuing for the pen was Seth Halvorsen in the 7th, who gave up a homer to Eugenio Suarez that made it 5-2 Dodgers, and also gave up a two-out infield single but that was where it stopped.

Jack Dreyer took over in the 8th and got into trouble himself, giving up back-to-back groundball singles to corner things with nobody out. But he followed with a strikeout, then after a stolen base put a pair in scoring position, gave up an RBI groundout to Dane Myers to make it 5-3 Dodgers before a flyout ended that threat.

For the Reds, Williamson was still in for the 7th, working around a pair of walks thanks to a double play sandwiched between. The 8th began with another Hayes error on a Tommy Edman grounder and a double followed to put a pair in scoring position. After Teoscar was intentionally walked, Kyle Tucker grounded out on a great play to home by Elly.

That was when Tejay Antone entered and Will Smith hit for Hunter Feduccia, skying a flyball to center for a sac fly to make it 6-3 Dodgers, but that was all.

That setup Evan Phillips for the save chance, as he struck out two in a scoreless frame, touching 99 MPH.
