It’s the lowest Puig has ever hit, and after he hit sixth the other day, that’s the second time in a week we’ve been able to say that. He’s been hitting terribly for more than a month, so I can’t really complain about it too much. It’s just that Don Mattingly kept putting Dee Gordon atop the lineup for multiple seasons when he was contributing nothing, and Andre Ethier, who has been lousy for most of two years and doesn’t even have a great track record against Trevor Cahill, is hitting fifth. (I don’t care about that, but I’m grasping for straws to find a reason Mattingly might.) It’s not that Puig hitting low is an enormous issue; it’s just weirdly inconsistent.
On the other hand, at least he’s playing again after apparently being sick yesterday, so, I guess I’m over it.
Much more importantly: This is the last time we’ll see the Diamondbacks this year. Yay! The next time we see them will be in 2015, and it’s anyone’s guess who will be their GM or their manager. What a disaster season for the self-appointed protectors of the “right way to play the game.” They’ll throw Trevor Cahill today against the Dodgers and Zack Greinke.
Weirdly, the Dodgers have held a two-game lead on San Francisco for each of the last seven games. Today, it’s on the Giants to see if that keeps up, because they’re the late Sunday night game on ESPN, with Tim Hudson against Kyle Lobstein. Wait, really? Kyle Lobstein? Is that real? It is? Come on, Tigers.
