On this episode of “Dugout Blues,” Jared Massey (Dodgers Nation) and I catch up while I’m in Arizona (by the time you read this, I’ll already be home).
Spring training is in full swing and the Dodgers are 4-1-2 at this stage, which means absolutely nothing. There are some guys off to quick starts, namely Alex Guerrero, Joc Pederson and Scott Schebler.
Brandon McCarthy debuted and was touched up for a double by Carlos Gomez. It was about his only blemish. Sergio Santos looked good and A.J. Ellis may have improved his framing a bit.
Hector Olivera may or may not need Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers have long since been seen as the favorites, and they could land him if they truly wanted to. But with all the health concerns, they might want to pass on Olivera, especially if he’s out for the 2015 season.
Starling Heredia, a Dominican teenager I wrote about here on Thursday, could be one of the Dodgers’ main targets during the next July 2 signing period. He reminds us of Manny Ramirez, Hanley Ramirez and Jose Bautista. If he’s 10 percent of what those guys have been, that would be a win for the Dodgers (that is, if they sign him).
