History of the No. 24 & 35 pick in the MLB Draft

As you probably know, the Dodgers have the 24th overall selection in Monday’s MLB Rule 4 Draft. They also have the 35th overall pick and five picks in the Top 101. They’ll be able to add some future big league talent if the past is any indicator.

Here are all the selections for 24 and 35 in the last 20 drafts (since 1995):

No. 24

2014: SS Cole Tucker, Pirates
2013: OF Billy McKinney, Athletics
2012: SS Deven Marrero, Red Sox
2011: RHP Taylor Guerrieri, Rays
2010: OF Gary Brown, Giants
2009: OF Randal Grichuk, Angels
2008: SS Anthony Hewitt, Phillies
2007: RHP Michael Main, Rangers
2006: OF Cody Johnson, Braves
2005: LHP Brian Bogusevic, Astros
2004: C Landon Powell, Athletics
2003: RHP Chad Billingsley, Dodgers
2002: RHP Joe Blanton, Athletics
2001: LHP Macay McBride, Braves (via Dodgers)
2000: RHP Blake Williams, Cardinals
1999: RHP Kurt Ainsworth, Giants
1998: OF Andy Brown, Yankees
1997: OF Tyrell Goodwin, Yankees
1996: RHP Sam Marsonek, Rangers
1995: OF Corey Jenkins, Red Sox

Aside from Billingsley and Blanton, not a ton to get excited about. Here are some other notable No. 24 selections (10.0 or better bWAR):

1990: OF Rondell White, Expos
1988: RHP Alex Fernandez, Brewers
1984: LHP Terry Mulholland, Giants
1974: SS Rich Dauer, Orioles

Here’s hoping for better results at No. 35.

No. 35

2014: 2B Forrest Wall, Rockies
2013: LHP Matt Krook, Marlins (unsigned)
2012: C Kevin Plawecki, Mets
2011: OF Jacob Anderson, Rays
2010: SS Matt Lipka, Braves
2009: 3B Matt Davidson, Diamondbacks
2008: LHP Evan Fredrickson, Brewers
2007: OF Julio Borbon, Rangers
2006: OF Kyler Burke, Padres
2005: LHP Cesar Ramos, Padres
2004: RHP Matt Fox, Twins
2003: RHP Luis Atilano, Braves
2002: C Jeremy Brown, Athletics
2001: RHP J.D. Martin, Indians
2000: OF Tyrell Goodwin, Rangers
1999: RHP Brian West, White Sox
1998: OF Aaron Rowand, White Sox
1997: OF Mark Fischer, Red Sox
1996: RHP Jason Marquis, Braves
1995: SS Mark Bellhorn, Athletics

It’s worse, if you can believe it. At least there are two 50-plus bWAR guys from days gone by.

1992: OF Johnny Damon, Royals
1981: LHP Mark Langston, Mariners

The Dodgers have never selected a player at No. 35 overall, so this will be a first for the organization.

=====

The Dodgers also have the following selections: 67, 74, 101. Here are the notable selections at those spots.

67: Jordan Zimmermann (2007), Kurt Suzuki (2004), Wally Joyner (1983), Mike Moore (1978), Ron Guidry (1971), Rick Reuschel (1970)
74: Jon Jay (2006), David Cone (1981), Dan Petry (1976), Jim Clancy (1974), Graig Nettles (1965)
101: Jonathan Lucroy (2007), Charlie Moore (1971)

Some solid players for sure, but this shows just how important scouting is when it comes to the amateur draft. There are gems to be found outside the first round, and this new scouting/player development department will have its first chance to show what it can do.

If the Dodgers land just one guy in the early rounds who is at all significant in the majors at some point, this draft will be considered a success.
