On this episode of “Dugout Blues,” Jared Massey (Dodgers Nation) and I chat about the Dodgers’ doings before going off on a movie tangent to end the progrum.
Zack Greinke is good at pitching. Zack Greinke is good at hitting. Zack Greinke is good at defending. Therefore, Zack Greinke is good at baseballing.
Howie Kendrick went on the disabled list with a strained hamstring. He’s out until September, but the Dodgers have quite a capable backup in Enrique Hernandez. It looked like it might be Jose Peraza at first, but he was up from, and back to, Oklahoma City in the span of three days.
Justin Turner is back from his MRSA leg infection. Scary stuff. Also scary, his ability to hit baseballs. He hasn’t missed a beat, and I’m not sure how much more I could have taken of Alberto Callaspo, starting third baseman.
There were some promotions on the farm. Most notably, Alex Verdugo got promoted from Low-A to High-A. He’s just 19 years old, so the promotion was a bit of a surprise and an aggressive move by the player development department. Despite that, I like it. Josh Sborz and Trevor Oaks are also with Rancho Cucamonga, as that team looks really stacked for a playoff run.
Cody Bellinger got hit on the wrist by a pitch on Saturday. Thankfully, he’s going to be OK. The kid is just ripping it in the California League. Another guy ripping it is Willie Calhoun. The Dodgers’ 4th-round draft pick has done nothing but hit since turning pro. Jared threw a Delwyn Young comp on him, which is quite apt. Both have similar profiles offensively (good) and defensively (not so good).
