On this episode of “Dugout Blues,” Jared Massey (Dodger Blue) and I try to talk you (and ourselves) off the ledge of a depressing Dodger week.
The Dodgers have been bad the last couple weeks, but were particularly bad this past week. We finished recording before we knew Sunday’s game would go 17 innings, so at least they go that win.
Clayton Kershaw is still good. That hasn’t changed. That won’t change. Thank goodness for that.
Some of the youngsters have performed quite well to this point. Joc Pederson, Corey Seager and Trayce Thompson all had multi-home run games this past week. It’s also no surprise they’re three of the four best hitters on the team to date.
Alex Wood had a fantastic start in San Diego and showed exactly the type of pitcher he could be at his best. He isn’t a 13-strikeout guy every time out, but he has that kind of ability despite not having elite velocity.
Hyun-Jin Ryu and Frankie Montas are both on rehab assignments. That’s good. Brandon McCarthy suffered a minor setback. That’s not so good. Let’s just hope these guys keep progressing and can help the Dodgers later this season.
Some strong minor-league performers in the last week include Julio Urias, Alex Verdugo, Brock Stewart, and Cody Bellinger. Jose De Leon is on the DL with Oklahoma City and is actually back at Camelback Ranch. Here’s hoping this won’t be a thing throughout the season. Yaisel Sierra exited his Sunday start early with a blister, but he wasn’t pitching particularly well before that. In fact, he has yet to show anything close to being an actual $30 million pitcher. Since he’s almost 25 and is struggling in High-A, it’s a little more concerning than if he were 19 or 20. Hope he can turn it around.
