If you’ve been living under a rock for the last 18 months, I, and many Americans, envy you. Today is the merciful end of what has been the worst election cycle in my lifetime. Seriously, it has been beyond bad.
Now, I and the other writers/moderators try to keep political talk off this leading baseball blog (except Chad because he DGAF), but we am powerless to do so on a day with all these implications. It’s the only thing people will talk about, even if, I don’t know, the Dodgers overpaid in a trade for Ryan Braun. But there are some ground rules:
- Be civil.
- No personal attacks.
- Have a discussion, not an argument.
Don’t be an asshole.
Not everyone is going to agree on the presidential candidates, propositions and whatever down-ballot race/measure/issue you care about. Instead of resulting to yelling and childishness, use this time to educate those who are genuinely curious about your stance on a particular issue. Don’t shout down other people for having a differing opinion. Embrace debate and do so in a way that doesn’t make you look like a dick. Also understand you aren’t going to change any minds, so don’t be a jerk when discussing whatever issue it is you want to discuss. Make no mistake: I’ll be watching and making sure things aren’t getting out of control.
I’m all for free speech and debate, but don’t resort to childish name-calling, personal attacks and all the other BS that comes when talking about politics. Be better than the politicians, pundits and blowhards. After all, this is a baseball blog and we all want the same thing: A World Series win for the Dodgers.
Just be thankful this is all going to be over after tonight. That is, unless God is that twisted and figures out a way to extend our misery. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me. But no matter what happens today, there are still a lot of issues this country has to resolve going forward — regardless of who wins this election. The future is uncertain and, on some levels, scary.
