Dodgers @ D-backs April 22, 2017: Please don’t allow nine runs in one inning again

Last night’s eighth-inning collapse was so dumbfounding that the headline of Chad’s recap was longer than the recap itself. The Dodgers will attempt to rebound tonight behind Kenta Maeda.

Unfortunately, Maeda hasn’t gotten off to a very good start this year. In three games and 14 innings pitched, he has an ERA of 7.07, a FIP of 4.54 and a WHIP of 1.357. His last time out, he faced the Diamondbacks and lasted just four innings, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk. After 71 pitches, he was removed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Dodgers ended up winning that game, 8-4.

The Dodgers will see Robbie Ray for the second time this season. He pitched six innings against them on April 17, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks. Perhaps more notably, he struck out 10 batters. As I noted in that game thread, Ray’s strikeout abilities may be a bit underrated.

Ray will only face one left-handed batter tonight: Joc Pederson, making his fourth start against a left-handed pitcher this season (he did not face Ray in the prior game). Brett Eibner gets his second start of the year, this time in left field. Scott Van Slyke is at first base in place of Adrián GonzálezEnrique Hernández is at shortstop in place of Corey Seager, and Chris Taylor is at second base in place of Chase UtleyAustin Barnes is also catching in place of Yasmani Grandal.
