Marlins @ Dodgers July 19, 2019: It’s good to be home

It must feel good to be home for the Dodgers (64-35). They survived a brutal East Coast road trip that included three rain delays, defensive lapses, bullpen meltdowns, ejections, HBPs, and a 12-inning marathon at Fenway that had Cody Bellinger downing copious amounts of Red Bull and Advil. The one silver lining was that the Dodgers hit a bunch of home runs. They crushed 15 dongs for the four-game series in Philadelphia, tying a franchise record for a series.

Bryce Harper and Phillies closer Hector Neris reacted like they won the World Series in the series split. It’s one thing to celebrate a walk-off win, especially against the juggernaut Dodgers, but Neris took it too far. Max Muncy was annoyed and rightfully so. Let them celebrate, because the Dodgers are 14 games up in the NL West. The Phillies are 7.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

Next up for the Dodgers is a five-game homestand before they return to the East Coast to take on the Nationals in D.C. and the Rockies at Coors Field. That should be another eventful trip, but at least the Boys in Blue will get some time at home and a day off Monday.

They’ll face the Miami Marlins (36-58) for the first time this season when they open a three-game set on Friday night at Dodger Stadium. Even though Don Mattingly’s Marlins are mired 20 games back and in last place in the NL East, they’ve beaten the Dodgers in four of their last five matchups.

Rookie right-hander Zac Gallen (0-1, 4.24 ERA, 4.04 FIP) is still looking for his first major-league win. Through four starts, the Marlins’ No. 5-overall prospect has struck out 21 batters in 17 innings of work (11.1 K/9), but he struggled with his command vs. the Mets in his last start. Gallen allowed two runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts in five innings.

The 23-year old hasn’t been efficient. Gallen hasn’t pitched past the 5th inning and has thrown 90+ pitches three times. He was dominant at the Triple-A level for New Orleans this year, going 9-1 with a 1.77 ERA and a 0.712 WHIP in 14 starts. He struck out an impressive 112 batters in 91.1 innings (11 K/9).

Hyun-Jin Ryu (10-2, 1.78 ERA, 2.84 FIP) continues his Cy Young bid. He leads all of baseball in ERA (1.78), BB/9 (0.85) and K/BB (9.55) among qualified starters. He’s second in WHIP (0.93) behind Justin Verlander. Other than the asterisk of a start at Coors Field on June 28 when he allowed a season-high seven runs, Ryu has allowed two runs or less in his other 17 starts.

Ryu’s 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA and 1.241 WHIP vs. the Marlins in three career starts. Old friend Curtis Granderson is 3-for-7 (.429) with a double and a home run against Ryu.

The Dodgers placed Dylan Floro on the 10-day injured list for the first time in his career.

The Dodgers announced in a press release that they will unveil the 2020 All-Star Game logo on Tuesday.

The Dodgers haven’t hosted the All-Star Game since 1980.
