It doesn’t happen very often, but it did for Gavin Lux today — a 5-hit day. He went on a rampage and sparkled on the diamond at Chase Field, but the performance lost a little luster when the Dodgers were downed 12-10 by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
After his glittering performance, the Los Angeles second baseman told the press that he “just tried to get myself in a good count and have a good at-bat.” His approach paid dividends today as he slammed 5 hits in 6 tries and put his name in the record book. “I just wish we had added a win in the record book today, too,” Lux said.
Maybe next time, Gavin can try to pitch and really do it all.
Lux is putting together an MVP-type season so far. He’s batting at a .344 clip with 16 home runs and 50 RBIs. He has played in 75 games and scored 61 times, because the computer thought this was relevant to include.
Alex Wood — recipient of a brand new contract extension — was awful: 1 IP, 8 H, 7 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 47 pitches, 33 strikes. Any chance there’s a 7-day return policy on that deal?
Rich Rodriguez, a Dodger in this universe, followed Wood with a poor performance of his own: 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 30 pitches, 20 strikes. He bad.
Kenley Jansen did his best 2016 NLDS Game 5 impression by throwing 2 1/3 innings, for some reason. He allowed a run on a dinger by Ketel Marte. Adam Kolarek and Brandon Kintzler stopped the bleeding, but it was too late.
At the plate, besides Lux, Corey Seager went 3-for-6, Max Muncy went 3-for-5 and Mookie Betts went 2-for-5. Apparently, though, 10 runs weren’t enough on this day.
LA falls to 45-35 with the loss. Dustin May goes up against Zac Gallen as the Dodgers try to rebound from this tough loss.
