Over the years many have inquired about the whereabouts of Andrew Toles, and sadly reports have emerged recently with distressing news about former Dodgers outfielder, as he was arrested for trespassing after being found sleeping behind a building at Key West International Airport.
According to a report in the Miami Herald, the 28-year-old Toles was jailed Monday when police found him sleeping behind a Federal Express building at the Key West airport. Police officials said Toles was given several opportunities to leave the area but he refused and was arrested. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office’s report said Toles only had a black book bag with him and listed Toles’ address as the “streets of Key West.” As of Friday, Toles remained at the Stock Island Detention Center on a $500 bond. A court date has been set for July 2.
Toles had his share of troubles during his baseball career, including battling mental health issues, but rose as an example of a great feel-good story when he made a splash with the Dodgers in 2016, including posting a .878 OPS that year and having a stellar playoffs.
A dynamic player, he put up a .792 OPS in the majors and managed almost 2 WAR in just 249 plate appearances. He seemed on his way to earning a starting place in 2017 when he tore his ACL trying to track down a fly ball near the warning track in an attempt to preserve a no-hit bid. While he recovered to play again in 2018, before 2019 began he was placed on the restricted list and left the organization soon after for undisclosed reasons.
This was certainly an unfortunate way to find out what’s been doing on with Tolesy since then. And while Toles has been bailed out of jail, it’s a helpless feeling to want to help a guy but knowing that his mental health issues are gonna take a lot of work that you as a fan/stranger can’t do much about.
I just hope the next update is about him turning it around.
