Despite his struggles this season, Sonny Gray turned in a masterful performance to lead the Reds to a 2-0 victory in Los Angeles.
Gray turned in eight shutout innings and surrendered three hits (all singles) and four walks while striking out seven batters. Cody Reed started the ninth for the Reds and allowed the go-ahead run to come to the plate for the Dodgers, but Craig Stammen came in and retired Austin Barnes to seal the victory for Cincinnati.
Walker Buehler labored through five innings and only gave up two runs, but issued five walks and needed 103 pitches to get through the fifth. The Dodger bullpen did their job and kept the Cincinnati offense at bay, but the Dodger bats couldn’t crack Gray.
“The key at this level is throwing strike one,” said Gray. “Successful pitchers do it.“
This loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Dodgers, who have their next chance at win number 50 tomorrow against the Reds. Julio Urias takes the hill for the Dodgers against old friend Jose De Leon.
