OOTP 21: June 28, 2020 – Dodgers 5, Giants 4 – Ferguson tries to spoil a sweep, but fails

Still playing traditional extra innings in this simulation, the Los Angeles Dodgers (48-36) and San Francisco Giants (38-46) needed 12 frames thanks to the pitcher you’d expect to blow a one-run lead in the ninth.

Before getting into all of that, the Dodgers rallied for one run in the 12th against Dany Jimenez to complete the sweep with a 5-4 victory on Sunday. Corey Seager drew a bases-loaded walk for the go-ahead run thanks to Jimenez also giving up a hit and hitting a batter.

“You can’t get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I’m just happy we got the win,” Seager told the Los Angeles Chronicle.

Hmmmmm…

Already in the game to pitch the 11th, Kenley Jansen closed out the victory as he finished the day with one strikeout in his two innings of work.

If it wasn’t for Mookie Botts, the Dodgers wouldn’t have been in position to win at all, let alone in extras. A two-run double off of old friend Tony Watson in the eighth flipped the score, pushing the Dodgers to a 4-3 lead after trailing by one since the fourth. Botts finished the day with 4 RBIs, having also connected on a two-run shot off of Kevin Gausman in the fourth to cut into San Francisco’s 3-0 lead.

Gausman worked 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven while allowing four hits and two walks, with the Botts homer the only runs allowed.

On the other side, Alex Wood struggled a bit early on, but pitched a decent game while his ERA remained pretty terrible at 5.97. Allowing 11 hits and a walk to six strikeouts, Wood left the game after 6 2/3 innings.

With Wood leaving down 3-2, the Dodgers then sent out a host of other pitchers, including Adam Kolarek, Blake Treinen, Caleb Ferguson and Pedro Baez before Jansen entered in extras. While most of those pitchers have sucked at one point or another in this fake season, it should be pretty obvious who blew the lead in the ninth.

A leadoff double for Mauricio Dubon in the ninth off of Ferguson was followed by a walk and sacrifice fly before Dave Robots mercifully pulled him back out of the game. Baez gave up a single to Austin Slater in the ninth, but otherwise worked through the 10th without much of a problem.

Again on a three-game winning streak, the Dodgers wrap up June with a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. Dustin May will take the mound for the Dodgers to face Cincinnati’s Anthony DeSclafani.
