Led by four-hit games for Austin Slater, Mauricio Dubon, and old friend/not a Barve in the simulation (or I guess in reality now) Yasiel Puig, the San Francisco Giants ended the Los Angeles Dodgers’ win streak with a 10-5 victory on Saturday.
Julio Urias struggled from the start, allowing three runs in the opening inning thanks to a Wilmer Flores homer, finishing the game with 3 IP, 8 hits allowed and 0 strikeouts. Urias’ outing came to an end in the fourth without recording an out after homers by Evan Longoria and Dubon, the first of two for him in the game.
Banished to middle relief and mop-up duty, Kenley Jansen entered the game for a pair of innings. Jansen allowed back-to-back doubles by Drew Smyly and Puig to bring in the fourth run of the fourth inning, giving the Giants (43-55) a 7-3 lead with both sides tacking on a few extra runs late in the game.
Honestly, I love to imagine how annoying Puig would be in a four-hit game against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
Joe Kelly and Pedro Baez showed up to give up a few more runs in the sixth and seventh before Adam Kolarek and Zach McAllister closed out the day.
Going back a few innings, Gavin Lux hit his 19th home run in the first inning to give the Dodgers (59-40) a pair of runs, and Urias drove in Will Smith in the third to score the Dodgers’ only runs before the bottom of the ninth.
Trevor Oaks, yet another former Dodgers (sort of), gave up a two-run, pinch-hit homer to Chris Taylor in the ninth, but it meant little in the final score.
Along with the trio of four-hit games, Flores, Longoria and Buster Posey all finished the day with two hits as San Francisco ended the game with 21 hits to the Dodgers’ seven.
“Winning the game is always the first objective,” Flores said.
Smyly allowed three runs in six innings with eighth strikeouts and six walks. Even with all those walks, the Dodgers failed to do much with them en route to the loss.
Dustin May and journeyman Trevor Cahill will take the mound on Sunday for the series finale. Cahill has been a surprisingly effective starter while May has struggled a bit in our simulation.
