The Dodgers were three outs away from completing a four-game sweep of the Padres and moving 5.5 games ahead of the field in the NL West. The offense stranded a lot of runners on Sunday, which required the pitching to be nearly perfect to cap off their fifth-straight win. Craig Kimbrel and Yency Almonte were far from perfect, allowing two singles, a double and a homer to give the Padres a 4-1 lead (the Dodgers scored a run in the ninth to make it 4-2).
Today, the Dodgers look to bounce back and get revenge on a Rockies squad that’s had the Dodgers number this season. They’ve won four of the six matchups, taking two of three in both series, both in Colorado. Tonight marks the first matchup between these teams at Dodger Stadium, which is where these two teams will play the final six games of the regular season thanks to the lockout.

Julio Urias makes his second consecutive start against the Rockies. Urias picked up the win in the finale last Wednesday at Coors, as he allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Urias was pulled in the sixth after allowing a leadoff walk and two consecutive one-out singles. Brusdar Graterol relieved Urias and allowed his third earned run to come in. Urias has allowed exactly three earned runs in both of his starts against the Rockies, with his other coming in his first start of the season where he lasted only two innings. This is either Urias’ last or second-to-last start before the All-Star rosters are announced, so it could be his final chance to make an his statement. Urias currently has a 2.64 ERA (seventh-best in the NL among qualified starters) and is tied for the eighth-best WHIP among qualified NL starters.
Opposing Urias is Kyle Freeland, who got the win against the Dodgers last Tuesday. Freeland allowed six hits, three walks and three runs over six innings and struck out five. The Dodgers hit two dongs off him, a Hanser Alberto solo shot in the second and a Max Muncy solo shot in the sixth. It was a much better start for Freeland than his Opening Day start against the Dodgers. He allowed five hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings. He had tossed three scoreless innings, but allowed two singles, two doubles and a walk before getting pulled with two outs in the fourth. It’s a holiday so basically just go read what Allan wrote about Freeland before the game last week.
Albert is in the lineup today starting at third with Justin Turner serving as the DH. Chris Taylor returns to the lineup after suffering a foot contusion on Saturday and starts in left. Trayce Thompson starts in right and Mookie Betts gets his first start of the year at second.

During the game yesterday, the Dodgers announced they had agreed to a contract extension with Austin Barnes. Chad wrote about it when he woke up.

Kimbrel took a comebacker to the back last night. He’s not being placed on the IL, but is unavailable for a few days.
If there’s a save situation tonight, Brusdar Graterol, Phil Bickford or Almonte will be the likely closer.
