Dodgers @ Mets May 22, 2014: Zack Greinke, If Weather Permits

citifieldI was in the press box at Citi Field for the last two nights. Tonight, I’m going again, but this time to sit in the stands and… oh, Chone Figgins is leading off? Never mind. For just the third time this year, Figgins is in the starting lineup, and for the first time since 2010, he’s starting at second. He started 158 games for Seattle that year. One hundred and fifty eight. Somehow that feels not long enough ago.

That means Dee Gordon takes a seat — for now, anyway, because I’m sure we’ll see him as soon as lefty Jon Niese is out of the way — as his tough May continues. For the month, he’s at .247/.302/.303; in the 16 games since he had a five-hit May 3 in Miami, he’s at .194 /260/.269. He is, however, still swagged up and humble.

But Gordon no longer really has to worry much about his job security, because as of earlier this afternoon, Alex Guerrero was still in the hospital recovering from surgery on his ear. I know what you’re thinking: wait, still? Really? For an ear? But the more we hear about this, the more that report that indicated it might be five weeks seems realistic. From people who have seen the damage… it’s really bad. And still insane that this is a real thing we’re talking about.

Meanwhile, Miguel Olivo was removed from the 40-man roster and released today, completely unsurprisingly. I can’t imagine he ever gets a baseball job again. There are now 39 players on the 40-man.

Now let’s never speak about Olivo again, shall we? Zack Greinke is on the mound, and he’s always a joy to watch. Clayton Kershaw is on the mound tomorrow. Things are trending in the right direction.  As for the weather, it’s gloomy here and has been all day, and the tarp has been pulled over the infield. However, the game is expected to get in, because if and when it rains, it’s not expected to last long, though it might be heavy. However it plays out, let’s just hope it doesn’t knock Greinke out of the game, as it did in Washington earlier this month.
