Cardinals @ Dodgers May 14, 2016: Carlos Martinez vs. Scott Kazmir

Good win last night. Turns out, scoring runs is a good thing. With Scott Kazmir going against one of MLB’s most potent offenses, the Dodger bats will probably need to make a substantial appearance again tonight.

It’s going to be tough against Carlos Martinez, who is one of the better young pitchers in the game. He isn’t off to the greatest start, but he’s still been solid for the Redbirds.

Yasmani Grandal is back in the lineup for the first of what Dave Roberts said should be five consecutive starts. That’s good! Chase Utley is also back after a night off. And despite Howie Kendrick doing well in the leadoff spot last night, he’s back on the bench. He should probably be in there instead of Carl Crawford, but Crawford isn’t going to get on one of his famous 20-game hot streaks if he isn’t playing (and that might not happen anyway).

Big-time news on the injured players front…

OK, before we get too excited, Hyun-Jin Ryu still has a long way to go before he makes it back to the Dodgers. And there’s no telling how good he’s actually going to be. But this is the first step toward his return.

Brandon McCarthy was up to 89 MPH in a bullpen last week, so he’s not as far along as Ryu. But he’s another guy who could make an impact upon his return.

RIP in peace, Yimi Garcia.

And on the minor-league side…

Cody Bellinger had a great spring training, but missed the first month of the season with a hip injury. He got off to a slow start with Double-A Tulsa, but hopefully this gets him going.

This is a thing, apparently. Maybe Daniel can tell Elian Herrera all the hot spots in Japan.
