Podcast: ‘Dugout Blues’ episode 166 – Kershaw, Piazza, trade rumors

On this episode of “Dugout Blues,” Jared Massey (Dodger Blue) and I talk all things Dodgers, including a lot about the upcoming trade deadline (Aug. 1).

But first, Clayton Kershaw suffered a setback in his rehab from a herniated disc. There is no timetable for his return. Season over (basically).

The Dodgers took 2 of 3 games from each the Nationals in Washington and the Cardinals in St. Louis. You know, like they’re a good baseball team or something.

Mike Piazza and Ken Griffey, Jr. went into the Hall of Fame on Sunday. We both paid homage to them, as they were prominent baseball figures during our early days as baseball fans.

There are a lot of trade rumors floating around — most prominently around Chris Archer and Chris Sale. The Dodgers have also been linked to Jay Bruce, Andrew Miller and Josh Reddick.

In the minors, Yadier Alvarez made his full-season-ball debut for Great Lakes. He went five innings and struck out 10 hitters. All aboard the hype train! Edwin Rios is still destroying baseballs in High-A and should be heading to Tulsa sooner rather than later. Willie Calhoun is also hitting well and leads the organization in homers. Carlos Rincon was a $350,000 signing last year and, while it’s extremely early, he’s a guy to keep an eye on as he progresses through the minors. D.J. Peters is mashing in Ogden, but many folks do that. Let’s see what he does when he gets to Midland. Oh, Jose De Leon is still good (eight innings, 10 strikeouts last time out) despite being rumored in many trades.

We finish the episode, as usual, with a solid Q&A session.
