Cardinals @ Dodgers – April 30, 2023: Trying for a sweep; Gavin Stone gets the call

The Dodgers are going for a … a sweep? What is this madness?

Yes, the Dodgers are going for their first three-game series sweep of the season this afternoon against the Cardinals, as well as their third three-game winning streak.

Cardinals starter Jake Woodford hasn’t been good so far, averaging less than five innings a start on the season and carrying a 5.47 ERA with a 6.85 FIP and 7.03 xERA, so nothing is particularly promising about his profile other than the fact that near 30% of fly balls can’t possible continue to go for homers.

Amazingly, the Dodgers don’t have a huge advantage, as Noah Syndergaard is barely averaging over five innings a start, and has a 6.58 ERA with a 5.06 FIP and 4.87 xERA. For a guy who hoped to rejuvenate his career in 2023, his velo has dropped 1-2 ticks and at this point him recovering to be league average would be a huge win. For a guy who has never been even mediocre at holding runners, it’s almost amazing that he’s only given up nine stolen bases so far considering they are perfect in attempts, though perhaps that’s because they are too busy getting extra-base hits.

The biggest news to emerge happened last night, as the Dodgers are reportedly calling up prospect Gavin Stone.

Feel free to read a full report about him here, and while Josh didn’t think he was fully ready yet after his last start, the Dodgers are likely just gonna use him for a bit to give the rotation extra rest.

Let’s go winning streak.
