Dodgers 8, Marlins 4: Knack’s 5 shutout backed by Edman, Dills, Enrique homers

After yesterday’s embarrassment of a pitching performance, things went much better today aside from one newbie, as the Dodgers‘ staff limited damage and were backed early by homers in an 8-4 victory over the Marlins to even the series.

After Landon Knack lasted just two innings in his last start, he had a promising return today. Yes, it’s the Marlins, but he at least proved that when he has command he can be highly effective. Also, every appearance for him now is basically a playoff audition.

The most trouble he faced came in the 1st after a lead-off walk and stolen base that advanced the runner to third on a Will Smith throwing error. However, a shallow flyout and a strikeout killed off that rally. From there, he gave up just a lead-off walk in the 2nd, retiring the next nine batters to get him through four.

The 5th started with a walk, and he also gave up a two-out single, but managed to complete a scoreless outing when he was needed: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 87 Pitches.

Offensively, the Dodgers took a while to get going but they eventually did.

Looking for a quick start, Shohei Ohtani singled and stole his 49th base of the year, advancing to third on an errant throw. But the Dodgers couldn’t push him across in the 1st, hitting a shallow flyout and a grounder that saw Ohtani thrown out at the plate before a pop out ended the threat.

They started the scoring in the 2nd behind Smith’s 19th dinger of the year off the fair pole in left to make it 1-0.

But it was the 4th that was their big breakout inning. A Freddie Freeman single was followed by Tommy Edman‘s power surge continuing with his sixth of the year to add a pair of runs.

Will then reached on an error, Andy Pages singled, and Enrique Hernandez drove both of them and himself in with his 10th homer of the year to make it 6-0 in a flash.

Taking over for Knack out of the pen was Joe Kelly in a surprisingly drama-free 6th. Same could not be said for Zach Logue in his Dodger debut in the 7th. He gave up a single, double, and single for two runs, and was then relieved by Blake Treinen. Eventually, he got three outs, but the runner also scored on a sac fly to make it three runs against Logue and made it a game again at 6-3.

After a double in the 5th, they didn’t get anything going again until the 8th. That was where Freeman got a single and stole second with one out, which Will followed with a single of his own, advancing to second on a throw that missed the cutoff. After an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Max Muncy, pinch-hitter Gavin Lux struck out with the bases loaded for the second out. However, Chris Taylor saved the rally by singling in a pair of insurance runs to make it 8-3.

Closing the game’s final two innings would start with Michael Kopech in the 8th, who got a scoreless frame. Then Brent Honeywell Jr. gave up a run but finished the job in the 9th.
