Nationals 6, Dodgers 4: Sloppy play continues to cost team, as another rally comes up just short

The bats of the Dodgers continued to look surprisingly sluggish at times, while the defense has been consistently awful for almost a week now, and it cost them yet again as another rally fell short in a 6-4 loss to the Nationals.

======

The Dodgers just got two runs off MacKenzie Gore, which came in the 3rd after Chris Taylor singled with two outs and Shohei Ohtani smashed his third homer to right. Ohtani ended up falling just a double short of the cycle.

In addition to a lack of run support, Dustin May didn’t get much help from his defense either. After a walk and a single in the 2nd, back-to-back errors from Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas helped a pair of runs score.

With the game tied in the 3rd, May gave up a single, stolen base, and a Nathaniel Lowe single to give the Nats a 3-2 lead.

He didn’t surrender anything else, but May wasn’t particularly sharp. Velo was down and he couldn’t get whiffs: 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 1 K, 86 Pitches.

The bullpen didn’t help the Dodgers this time, as Anthony Banda got touched up for the first time this year in the 7th. A single and a James Wood homer made it 5-2, but after another double Banda was done with only getting one out.

Matt Sauer then made his Dodger debut in relief, and got help when a single resulted in Tommy Edman throwing out a runner at home to save a run. No matter, as Keibert Ruiz ripped a double to score another run and up the Nats lead to 6-2 before the inning ended.

At least Sauer also got a scoreless 8th to close the book on the Nats.

On the other side, the Nats pen got a scoreless 7th, and the 8th saw a lot of drama. A Michael Conforto walk was advanced to second on a passed ball, and it was cashed in by a Mookie single. An Edman single followed, and a Will Smith single plated another to make it 6-4.

In the 9th, there was a bit of tension thanks to a double and walk, but nothing ended up crossing the plate as they came up short again.

======

9-3 now, which makes them 1-3 on the road trip.

Same teams, same place, and same time tomorrow at 12:45 PM HT/3:45 PM PT/6:45 PM ET. It’ll be Justin Wrobleski making his season debut against … somebody.
