Dodgers @ Marlins May 5, 2025: Jack Dreyer opens the game, Hyeseong Kim gets his first start in Miami

The Dodgers saw their seven game win streak snapped last night, as a comeback fell short and they left the game-tying run on third with Miguel Rojas and Austin Barnes striking out to strand him. The Dodgers still took two of three in Atlanta to start this 10 game roadtrip, and now head to Miami to face the Marlins. They saw the Marlins just last week in LA and had a mostly comfortable sweep against them. On Monday, the Dodgers put up five runs in the first five innings in what looked to be a comfortable win, but Dustin May struggled in the sixth and left the bases loaded for Anthony Banda to allow a game-tying grand slam. They managed to pull out a 7-6 win in extras and carried that momentum into the other two games, outscoring Miami 27-9 in those two games. Miami hosted the A’s over the weekend and lost two of three, dragging their overall record down to 13-20.

The Dodgers are going with a pseudo-bullpen game today with Jack Dreyer starting, but Ben Casparius is supposed to take down a bulk of it. Casparius made his bid for a rotation spot in his last outing, which came in the second inning last Sunday after Tyler Glasnow left the game with shoulder inflammation. Casparius came through in that game, giving the Dodgers 3 2/3 shutout innings (on three days’ rest) with only two baserunners allowed and five strikeouts. Casparius threw a season-high 54 pitches in that game, but has been mostly a starter in the minors and threw as many as 95 pitches in a game last season. As for the rest of the bullpen, Banda and Luis Garcia threw the last two games and Kirby Yates threw Friday and Saturday, but wasn’t used yesterday. They should be relatively well-rested, but do have another scheduled bullpen game on Wednesday.

The Dodgers see Sandy Alcantara again after lighting him up last Tuesday. Alcantara went into that game struggling a bit coming off Tommy John surgery and got tagged for seven hits, five walks and seven runs in only 2 2/3 innings. Alcantara has been a bit better at home this season (4.64 ERA in four starts, his two truly awful starts have been his two road starts). Most of what I wrote in that thread still holds true for Alcantara, so just read that.

Hyeseong Kim gets his first start in the Majors after appearing in the last two games off the bench. Kim was a smiley defensive replacement on Saturday and pinch ran in the ninth last night, stealing second and taking third on a dropped third strike before being stranded as the tying run. For Miami, Kyle Stowers bats second after destroying the Dodgers last week. He had four hits in six plate appearances with two homers and a double. He had another two-homer game over the weekend against the A’s.

Shoutout to old friend Ross Stripling, who announced his retirement today.

Chicken Strip was the greatest thing to come out of Players’ weekend. Stripling spent 4.5 of his nine Major League seasons as a Dodger, posting a 3.68 ERA over 420 2/3 innings.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:40 PM PT and will be shown on SportsNet LA.
