Angels @ Dodgers May 17, 2025: The return of Clayton Kershaw

The Dodger offense tied a franchise record yesterday, grounding into five double plays while Dustin May struggled and Ryan Loutos had a rough Dodger debut. They look to bounce back tonight behind the 2025 debut of Clayton Kershaw.

Kershaw kicks off the 18th season of his Hall of Fame career after only making seven starts last season due to arm and toe injuries. The arm has been relatively healthy, and he’s finally recovered from the toe issue that ended his season at the end of August. He made five rehab starts and allowed six runs and 12 hits in 21 innings across three different leagues. He threw six no-hit innings in a start in the Arizona Complex league, but Baseball-Reference doesn’t have his pitch count for that. From the starts they do have, he topped out at 66 pitches and threw 57 pitches in his final start last Sunday for OKC. Old friend Tyler Anderson starts for the Angels.

Dalton Rushing gets his second start, catching Kershaw for the second time this season. He starts against a lefty, though Anderson’s splits are much more even than tomorrow’s left-handed starter Yusei Kikuchi. Miguel Rojas and Enrique Hernandez both start today and are both expected to be in the lineup tomorrow. Tommy Edman also is still tracking to return tomorrow, and if he does he’ll obviously be in there against a lefty.

Loutos was optioned to make room on the 26-man for Kershaw. Blake Snell was transferred to the 60-Day IL to open up the 40-man slot which seemed concerning at first, but really doesn’t shift his timeline. He’s been on the IL since April 3, meaning he’s now eligible to return on June 3. Considering he just recently started throwing again, he’s at least a few weeks away.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM PT and will be shown on SportsNet LA.
