Mets 6+, Dodgers 0+: Defensive failures continue to prove costly as bats sputter again

After two exciting games, this one was a stinker as the Dodgers defense again fucked it at the start and then nothing else happened for the Dodgers except the Mets adding on. It was 6-0 when I wrote this, who knows where it finished.

Tony Gonsolin got off to another horrid start tonight, though not all of it was his fault. Granted, he didn’t help matters when he started the game by hitting a batter, but he got a double-play ball next that Enrique Hernandez just whiffed on to put runners on the corners. After a stolen base, a Juan Soto groundball — that could’ve also been a double play if not for said stolen base — scored the game’s first run, and then Pete Alonso followed with a two-run shot to make it 3-0 Mets.

Business as usual for the Dodgers.

A Dodgers opponent has scored first at Dodger Stadium again, with three runs for the Mets. NY has scored in the first inning in all 3 in this series 22 times in 33 games opponent scored first 17 times they've scored in the top of the first inning, for 28 total runs in 33 first innings at home

Gonsolin then faced the minimum in the 2nd as he did finally get a double play to erase a single, then worked around a one-out single and walk in the 3rd, a lead-off walk in the 4th, and a two-out walk in the 5th.

The homer wasn’t ideal, and the trend of pitchers not being able to ever get the extra out for the defense is tiresome, but this is a different game if his defense makes a routine play: 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB (1 HBP), 6 K, 90 Pitches.

On the other side, there’s not a ton to report. Griffin Canning gave up three singles and walked one batter through six innings. No runner reached second base and he didn’t give up multiple baserunners in an inning.

Finally, in the 7th against their pen, the Dodgers got a RISP on a one-out double and then a HBP gifted them a second runner of the inning. That excitement was short lived when it took a total of six pitches to strikeout the next two batters and end the threat.

After Gonsolin, Anthony Banda and Lou Trivino got perfect frames in the 6th and 7th, but Ryan Loutos started the 8th by hitting a batter, walking a guy, and Alonso hit a three-run shot to make it 6-0 and prompted me to publish this shit.

Who knows how it finished. Shitty probably.

The Dodgers try to salvage a split against the Mets tomorrow in an earlier game at 10:10 AM HT/1:10 PM PT/4:10 PM ET on MLB Network. It’ll be Landon Knack looking to continue his solid run against David Peterson.
