The Dodgers played from behind for most of the game yet again, but they did take a lead in the 9th. Didn’t matter, as Alex Vesia blew that lead and they lost in extras to Angels, 7-6.
Welcome to second place … maybe soon.
======
Things were temporarily looking up for the Dodgers early on in the 1st, as Shohei Ohtani drew a walk, Mookie Betts got a glancing HBP, and after Freddie Freeman just missed a homer, the runners were cornered with one down. Teoscar Hernandez then came through with a single for the game’s first run, though a Max Muncy liner resulted in a double play when Teoscar was caught off the bag.

Max Muncy continues to torch the ball, and the Dodgers continue to have results like this even when the process is right for once. pic.twitter.com/4Z73Q5JAJQ

That lead did not last very long.
Emmet Sheehan took the ball in the 1st and got a groundout, then went walk, single, single, double, and groundout RBI before getting a strikeout to end the rally. By that point it was 3-1 Angels.

Nothing new, sadly.
——
What was new is with two outs in the 2nd, Alex Freeland drew a walk and Dalton Rushing hammered an 0-2 pitch for his second homer of the year to tie the game at 3-3.

New game.

Unfortunately, after a clean 2nd, in the 3rd Sheehan gave up a Taylor Ward homer to give the Angels a 4-3 lead.

They frustratingly added on in the 4th, as a one-out walk and a two-out Bryce Teodosio double made it 5-3.

Sheehan did rebound for a clean 5th to complete his outing: 5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 91 Pitches.
——-
Surprisingly, he left with the game tied.
After a quiet 3rd and seeing a single erased by a Michael Conforto double play in the 4th, the Dodgers put together a two-out rally in the 5th. Mookie, Freddie, and Teoscar all singled in a row to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Muncy followed with a walk to load the bases, and Andy Pages followed with a walk of his own to force the tying run in at 5-5.At that point it was, of course, up to Conforto. He worked a full count but eventually struckout on a fastball up.
Amazingly, things got worse in the 6th, as Miguel Rojas and Rushing back-to-back singles were followed by a Shohei liner up the middle that Zach Neto fielded for a 6-3 triple play.

Fucking baseball.
In the 7th, a one-out single and two-out steal was stranded, and a lead-off single in the 8th also went for naught.
——
For the Dodgers pen, they actually did a great job to start despite some shaky moments. Jack Dreyer began things off in the 6th, giving up a lead-off double but then getting two outs. Edgardo Henriquez entered for the final out and got a pop up to end that threat. He then continued in the 7th, getting a stress-free clean frame.
In a surprising move given his struggles, it was Blake Treinen in the 8th, and he started with a walk and then went 3-0 to the next hitter. However, he rebounded in that at-bat and the inning with a groundout and a pair of strikeouts.
——
That bought the offense enough time to do something, and Shohei Ohtani led the 9th off with his 43rd homer of the year to give the Dodgers a 6-5 lead.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t nearly enough for the pen, as Alex Vesia was tasked with getting the save, and he didn’t have it. A single, walk, sac bunt, and an intentional walk loaded the bases. A sac fly followed to tie the game up, and then he then issued another walk to re-load the bases.

He exited with the score tied 6-6, and Ben Casparius tasked with preventing a walk-off. He got lucky on a 3-0 pitch being called a strike, then got a strikeout to continue things.
Didn’t matter, the Dodgers did nothing in their half, then the Angels got a sac bunt single, and a bouncing single over the infield for the walkoff win.
Yeah…
