Dodgers 11, Rockies 4: A rare but welcome win that was (relatively) nice and easy

After yesterday’s incredibly frustrating loss to the Rockies to start the four-game set in Colorado, the Dodgers showed today what fans have wanted against a struggling team like the Rockies: dominance. The bats jumped out to a big lead early and mostly cruised to the finish line in a 11-4 victory.

The Dodgers offense started by getting back to their two-out shenanigans in the 1st, as Will Smith walked and back-to-back doubles from Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez drove in runs to make it 2-0 early.

In the 2nd, they did things with a long ball, as Alex Call hit his fourth homer — a no-doubt shot that went 453 feet — and then Shohei Ohtani hit his 44th homer to make it 4-0.

They had another big inning in the 3rd, as the rally started with one-out singles from Freddie and Teoscar. Once again with two down, it was Call and Miguel Rojas singling to drive in a run each, and Buddy Kennedy fisting an infield single for the third run to make it 7-0.

They did leave some runners in scoring position throughout the game, as they left a runner on second in the 1st, the bases loaded in the 3rd, runners on the corners in the 5th, and guys on first and second in the 6th.

For a brief moment, it looked like that might cost them.

On the mound for the Dodgers was Emmet Sheehan, who got a clean 1st and worked around a lead-off single in the 2nd. He also got into some trouble in the 3rd after a ball that was ruled an “infield single” was really just Kennedy throwing wide, leading umpire Lance Barksdale to collide with Ryan Ritter. A walk followed that, but Sheehan navigated around the traffic.

Sheehan then lost his shutout in the 4th, though thankfully not through his horrible throw on a Warming Bernabel check-swing “infield single” thanks to a great hustle play by Rojas.

Another single followed that, and Brenton Doyle later his a two-run shot to cut the lead to 7-2.

Sheehan came back with a clean 5th and also got the 6th, but not before issuing a one-out walk and Kyle Karros‘ first homer of his career, a two-run shot that cut the lead to 7-4.

Still, despite the two homers, he did what the Dodgers needed in Coors: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 91 Pitches.

Obviously though, three runs is not enough of a cushion to feel good at Coors. Thankfully, the 7th reversed their stranded trend, as Andy Pages and Call started with singles, Miggy sac bunted them over, and a passed ball plated Pages.

After an Alex Freeland walk, Ohtani hit into an RBI groundout, Mookie Betts followed with a single, and Will singled as well to make it a three-spot and a 10-4 game.

The rally ended there, and they had a quiet 8th inning, but the two-out stuff came back in the 9th. A Rojas lead-off walk was followed by two outs, but Mookie got his second hit of the game, and Will followed with his third hit to make it 11-4.

Nice.

Also fortunately, the pen did their job in the final three frames. Jack Dreyer gave up just a two-out single in the 7th, Ben Casparius touched 99 MPH again to make a two-out triple in the 8th not matter.

Closing things was Anthony Banda in the 9th, making it easy in 1-2-3 fashion.

Alex Call is just that blue eyes meme, btw.

The third game of four will be tomorrow with Shohei Ohtani on the bump against Tanner Gordon at 2:40 PM HT/5:40 PM PT/8:40 PM ET. I’ve never heard of the Rockies starter, so I’m personally horrified.
