Orioles 2, Dodgers 1: Tanner Scott surrenders walk-off, offensive struggles somehow get worse

Another day, another game, another series, another chance to reset, and another disaster, as the Dodgers couldn’t score beyond one Freddie Freeman homer, and Tanner Scott took another L as he gave up a walk-off in a 2-1 loss to the Orioles.

======

Due to Tyler Glasnow not being able to take the ball, Shohei Ohtani made a hell of an emergency starter tonight. While his pitch count did get inflated by deep counts, he got a clean 1st and gave up just a two-out single and wild pitch in the 2nd.

The 3rd was a bit more dramatic, as he gave up a two-out walk and infield single, but he managed to wiggle out of that as well while providing a highlight via swearing.

He also tagged poor Coby Mayo in the nuts.

The 4th … well, it looked bad. A double off the bag started a rally for the Orioles, and it was advanced to third when Dalton Rushing couldn’t make yet another rather routine block. From there, Ohtani seemed to empty the tank in order to get back-to-back strikeouts to put the Dodgers on the verge of escape.

Well, seeing Ohtani empty the tank to try and work around a double that hit the bag and another "wild pitch" from Rushing for back-to-back strikeouts was refreshing at least. Too late in the season for moral victories but somebody is digging deep.

Certainly a better emergency start than anybody else could’ve provided: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 70 Pitches.

As alluded to, Dave Roberts surprisingly came to get Ohtani, and Anthony Banda entered. Things didn’t look great as he issued a walk to corner things up and then fell behind 3-0 to the next batter before battling back to escape the jam.

Banda remained in for the 5th, getting an out but then issuing a walk to end his night. Ben Casparius entered, got the second out, then issued a walk to put a pair on. In perhaps the most frustrating way to give up the game’s first run, while a double steal was going on, Rushing again failed to block a ball and both runners ended up getting two bases to make it 1-0 Orioles before Casparius was able to get the final out.

Sigh.

This won’t shock you, but on the other side there wasn’t much going on for the Dodger offense. The first eight batters went down in order before Miguel Rojas reached on a hard-hit grounder that went for an error. Shohei followed with a walk and they had a bit of a rally going, but they weren’t able to push anything across.

The 4th started with the Dodgers breaking up the no-hitter on a Freddie Freeman rocket to third for a single.

A one-out walk from Michael Conforto was followed by a two-out walk from the pinch-hitting Enrique Hernandez to load the bases … which led to Rushing’s terrible day continuing with a strikeout.

The 5th went quietly after a Rojas single was quickly erased by an Ohtani double play, but now trailing, Freddie started the 6th by hitting the first pitch out for 19th homer to tie things up at 1-1.

With two outs, Andy Pages and Enrique got back-to-back singles, but Rushing’s terrible day continued, as he fouled a ball off his leg and had to be carried off.

Alex Call pinch-hit for him and struck out to end that threat … yeah.

In the 7th, a Mookie Betts two-out double and wild pitch led to a half-chance, but unsurprisingly that also went for naught. And they went quietly in both the 8th and 9th.

Ugly.

Back to the Dodgers pen, Jack Dreyer took over in the 6th and gave up just a two-out walk in his scoreless frame. Blake Treinen started the 7th and gave up a lead-off single, but he picked off the pinch-runner and then got the next two to face the minimum. Next up, it was Michael Kopech having a promising clean 8th in which he was able to throw a lot of strikes.

To start the 9th, Tanner Scott looked pretty sharp with a pair of strikeouts, but then he grooved a 1-2 fastball to Samuel Basallo for a walk-off.

What do you even say.

I dunno, man.

Gotta be honest, I don't really give a shit if the Padres are winning or losing, they need to play better is the thing.

Not much of a silver lining, but nice to see, I guess.

One positive is since that JDM road trip visit/the ovation/whatever, Mookie has been basically himself. Like a 6 WAR pace over the past month.
