The Dodgers (53-30) rode a nine-run sixth inning for a blowout win in the second game against the Padres (43-38). The offense continued to be frustrating through five innings, but exploded off Randy Vazquez with three sixth-inning homers capped off with Mookie Betts‘ third homer in the last three games. They added on late for a 15-3 win, avenging the 7-1 loss on Friday. Today, the Dodgers have a chance to take the series and hit a double-digit lead in the division for the first time this season with Emmet Sheehan squaring off against Michael King.

Sheehan starts trying to right the ship in a rough June. The Dodgers have lost each of Sheehan’s four starts in June and he’s only registered one quality start in that time. In Sheehan’s first three starts of the month, he allowed seven runs and three homers in 12 1/3 innings. Last time out against Baltimore, Sheehan turned in his worst start of the season and one of the worst of his career. He gave up six runs on eight hits and only recorded 10 outs before being lifted in the fourth. It wasn’t even a case of one blowup inning, as he allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in the first and then gave up homers in the second and third innings. He issued a pair of walks in the fourth before being pulled for Jack Dreyer, who gave up both inherited runs to close Sheehan’s line. Sheehan started in San Diego last month and struggled pitching on four days’ rest, giving up a pair of two-run homers in his four innings in a game the Dodgers would end up winning 5-4.
The Dodgers see King again after he dominated them in May. King allowed four hits and two walks over seven shutout innings with a season-high nine strikeouts as he out-dueled Yoshinobu Yamamoto in a 1-0 Padre win. That start got his ERA down to 2.31 on the season, but King really struggled over his next five starts. The Padres went 1-4 in that stretch and King gave up 28 hits and 19 runs in 26 2/3 innings, with six of the 10 homers he’s allowed this season coming in that five-start stretch. King bounced back to dominate Atlanta in his most recent start, allowing six hits and no walks in seven shutout innings in another 1-0 win. The Padre offense has been quite bad all season, but King’s only received 2.82 runs/game of support.
A pretty standard lineup for the Dodgers today, but Chuckie Robinson gets the start behind the plate after Dalton Rushing caught last night. Robinson did pinch hit for Shohei Ohtani last night and popped out against today’s starting catcher Rodolfo Duran.
