The Dodgers (69-41) unsurprisingly lost the bullpen game/Miguel Rojas hitting third game to open the series against the Red Sox. They actually led heading into the seventh inning, but Cole Irvin‘s bulk outing went south fast for a 9-4 Boston win. He did his job in preserving the bullpen to set up for today’s game, where Yoshinobu Yamamoto takes the ball against Payton Tolle.

Yamamoto gets the ball coming off a pair of strong second half starts in New York. Yamamoto opened the second half with a complete game against the Yankees, allowing two runs and four hits with seven strikeouts and needing only 102 pitches for the CG. He struggled a bit more with efficiency against the Mets, needing 100 pitches to get through six innings but he still only allowed five hits and a run. He issued three walks in that Mets game and only struck out five.
Tolle has put together a strong rookie season for the Red Sox with a 3.32 ERA/3.38 FIP in 95 pitches over 17 starts. Tolle’s been pretty consistent all season but has a couple rougher starts including giving up six runs on seven hits in three innings against the Nationals in his first start of July. Tolle had a 3.08 ERA through his first 11 starts but Boston only went 3-8 in those games. In six starts since then, they’re 5-1 with the lone loss coming in that Nationals game. Tolle is a lefty, but his splits have been slightly better against righties (.208/.280/.347) than lefties (.241/.274/.429).
Rojas is in the lineup again not hitting third this time. He’s hitting eighth and starting at short with Mookie Betts getting the night off. Enrique Hernandez hits fifth and starts in left and Teoscar Hernandez starts in right with Kyle Tucker sitting tonight. For Boston, Willson Contreras remains out of the lineup after leaving last night’s game after getting hit in the helmet.

The Dodgers did some bullpen shuffling, calling up Wyatt Mills and Kyle Hurt. Irvin was DFA’d and Will Klein was placed on the IL.
Dodgers roster moves:

-RHPs Kyle Hurt and Wyatt Mills recalled
-RHP Will Klein to the IL with right elbow discomfort
-LHP Cole Irvin DFA’d
Klein has been struggling hard of late, giving up at least one earned run in each of his last five outings. He’s having some elbow discomfort, so he’s the latest to hit the IL.

Trade SZN is nerve-wracking as a prospect-hugger. Bluesky linker is still messed up for me.

Kendall George and Zyhir Hope were scratched from Tulsa’s lineup just before the game today. Keep those Passan noti’s on.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM PT and will be on SportsNet LA.
