Braves 6, Dodgers 5: Bad defense, missed chances, and walked off by a guy’s first hit since June 3

After a frustrating loss yesterday, the Dodgers somehow had an even more frustrating loss today after they were walked off by Ha-Seong Kim, who had not had a hit since June 3. That comes after outfield defense cost them at least one run and they stranded a small island on the bases in huge bases loaded chances.

Just embarrassing stuff in a 6-5 loss to the Braves.

Looking to continue his great second half, Roki Sasaki started with a pair of outs and then a 1-2 slider caught too much of the plate against Matt Olson for a solo shot to make it 1-0 Braves.

An infield single, steal, and walk followed to run his pitch count up, but he did get out of that jam. Roki also had to work around a pair of baserunners in the 2nd via one-out and two-out singles, but did do so.

For the Braves it was AJ Smith-Shawver, who started with just a two-out walk in the 1st, but then Tommy Edman started the 2nd with a lead-off double. Two frustrating flyouts followed that left him on second, but after a Teoscar Hernandez walk, Hunter Feduccia came through with a single to tie the game at 1-1.

That was all they got as Shohei Ohtani continued to struggle with RISP this series.

The 3rd started with another lead-off double, this time from Freddie Freeman, and again a pair of flyouts left him standing on second. This time it was thankfully Tommy Edman coming through with his fifth homer of the year to make it 3-1 Dodgers.

In the 4th, they tried to rally with two outs as a Feduccia walk and an Ohtani single cornered things, and Ohtani then stole second to put a pair in scoring position. However, this time Freddie Freeman wasn’t able to come through and both were stranded. Smith-Shawver then got a clean 5th and that ended his night.

On the other end, now pitching with a lead, Roki got a 1-2-3 frame in the 3rd but then ran into mess in the 4th. A lead-off walk was followed by a steal, then a single blooped in front of Alek Thomas in center, who broke the wrong direction. A rather obvious instance where the Dodgers miss Andy Pages. Anyway, Austin Riley followed with a sac fly to center to make it 3-2 Dodgers.

Roki followed that by allowing a double to put a pair in scoring position, but more concerning was he was looking at his hand. A trainer came out and Roki eventually exited the game with blister issues.

Roki is leaving the game seemingly with a blister issue, which is not what the Dodgers need.

Roki wasn’t necessarily sharp, but who knows how much of that was a blister issue: 3.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 66 Pitches.

Why four runs instead of two? Good question.

In an emergency situation, Dave Roberts went with Edgardo Henriquez to prevent the runners from scoring, and Henriquez did induce a flyball out of Drake Baldwin. However, Teoscar Hernandez overran the ball in left and it fell in fair for a double that scored two and made it 4-3 Braves.

Just … I dunno, man.

Henriquez then got a strikeout and lineout to end the inning, but it was at least one, if not two additionally runs scoring thank to terrible outfield defense.

In the 5th, Eric Lauer took over, giving up an infield single to start that was sacrificed to second. He got out of that, but the 6th saw the Braves’ lead extended. Of all things it was a Sean Murphy homer that made it 5-3 Braves.

Lauer also issued a couple walks in the 6th, but no more damage.

For the Braves pen, Dylan Dodd started with a scoreless 6th that just saw a two-out single. Dylan Lee then had a disaster in the 7th, as things started with an odd Shohei Ohtani double where Ronald Acuna Jr. seemed to goad Ohtani so Shohei just took second.

A Freddie Freeman single followed to corner the runners, and Mookie Betts then singled for the third hit in a row to make it 5-4 Braves and corner the runners again.

Max Muncy then followed with a walk to load things up, which knocked Lee out for Didier Fuentes, who walked Tommy Edman and forced in a run to tie things at 5-5.

They seemed primed to take the lead at that point, but then Kyle Tucker flew out to left that Mookie didn’t risk coming home, then Alek Thomas grounded sharply into a double play and that was it.

Brutal.

Fuentes continued in the 7th and got into another situation like the previous inning. A Teoscar Hernandez lead-off single was sacrificed to second by Feduccia and advanced to third on an Ohtani groundout. An intentional walk to Freddie and an unintentional walk to Mookie loaded the bases. However, Muncy struck out on the ninth pitch of the at-bat that would’ve been a ball for a walk and the lead.

Later in the 9th, Victor Mederos got a scoreless and clean frame.

Back to the Dodgers pen, it was Evan Phillips in the 7th, working around a one-out single and two-out stolen base for a scoreless frame.

Brock Stewart got the 8th and started with disaster, as an infield single was followed by a double off the walk to put a pair in scoring position. Somehow he escaped, as he got a groundout, issued an intentional walk, and got a fortunate double play off a Mookie deflection.

In the 9th it was Tanner Scott again, who looked to cruise after getting two quick outs. However, a bloop double to right set the table, and after an intentional walk, it was Ha-Seong Kim pinch-hitting for the pitcher’s spot after they lost the DH earlier, and all he did was come up with his first hit since June 3 to walk it off.

Hilarious.

This was funny at least. About all the positives.
