Marlins 4, Dodgers 3: Bats quieted after explosive start as 8-game win streak snapped

Despite the return of Freddie Freeman, it felt like the Dodgers were due for a offensive clunker with Shohei Ohtani and Andy Pages out (and Will Smith resting). That’s basically what happened today after a quick start, as Tyler Glasnow continued to struggle with command and the offense went on vacation from the 2nd to 8th innings in a 4-3 loss to the Marlins that snapped an eight-game winning streak.

Thrust into a starter/bulk role back in May, Marlins starter Tyler Phillips struggled with the change initially but has been much better of late.

While he started with a pair of quick outs, Mookie Betts (20) and Max Muncy (28) went back-to-back on Phillips to make it 2-0 Dodgers just like that.

Unfortunately, they didn’t do much against him after that.

After ending the 1st, Phillips got around lead-off and one-out walks in the 2nd, then got a clean 3rd. He got two outs in the 4th, but then issued a walk to Josue De Paula and that was it for him.

Cade Gibson entered and had a better time than last night, as he got out of the 4th, and then pitched a clean 5th.

Phillips (and Gibson) ended up exiting with the lead, as Tyler Glasnow had a weird start again for the Dodgers.

Coming off probably his worst start of the season due to the return of some erratic command, Glasnow looked uncomfortable early before finding it, and then immediately lost it again.

Stretching and fidgeting throughout the 1st, Glasnow got two outs but then gave up a double, hit a batter, had a passed ball, and walked a batter to load things up before escaping that jam with a lineout. He was not so lucky in the 2nd, as a lead-off walk, wild pitch, and then a Graham Pauley bomb immediately tied things up at 2-2.

While he got the next two batters, he then gave up three singles in a row to plate another run and give the Marlins a 3-2 lead before being able to get out of the 2nd.

As mentioned, he seemed to find it after that, getting clean frames in the 3rd and 4th while striking out five. But that didn’t last long, as Glasnow then walked back-to-back hitters to start the 5th, and that was it for his day.

He did not have it again and hopefully he finds it down the stretch: 4 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 7 K, 91 Pitches.

Dave Roberts turned to Jack Dreyer, but his outing started roughly as well. He balked both runners over, made it moot by hitting the batter to load things up, then induced a groundball that Mookie Betts fielded but threw wildly to second and Alex Freeland made a good play to keep it from being worse. Still, it was an error and a run scored to make it 4-2 Marlins and add another to Glasnow’s tally.

Luckily, the damage ended there, as Dreyer then induced a shallow flyball that Kyle Tucker made a nice sliding catch on to save a run, and then got a double play to end the 5th.

Next up was Justin Wrobleski, who got a clean 6th, but ran into trouble in the 7th. Back-to-back singles started a rally, a sac bunt followed, and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Wrobleski responded by getting a huge strikeout and then got a pop foul to get another scoreless frame.

Closing the book on the Marlins was Seth Halvorsen, who got a nice and tidy 8th.

For the Marlins pen in the 6th it was Tyler Zuber, who allowed a lead-off walk and a stolen base with one out, but nothing else happening. Calvin Faucher then got a scoreless 7th, allowing a two-out single and steal, but nothing else. Michael Petersen followed with a clean 8th to send things to a save chance in the 9th.

Pete Fairbanks got two quick outs, but then issued a walk to Josue De Paula, who took second on defensive indifference, and then scored his first career run on a Hunter Feduccia single. 4-3 Marlins.

That was where the rally ended, unfortunately.

The Josue De Paula corner is back.

While he didn’t get any hits today in four trips to the plate, he did walk twice more, in addition to grounding out twice. He also scored his first MLB run on the aforementioned Feduccia single.

Obviously you want him to do damage at some point, but his approach looks great so far.

The series concludes tomorrow at the early time of 7:40 AM HT/10:40 AM PT/1:40 PM ET with Emmet Sheehan serving as the bulk pitcher up against Eury Perez.
