Marlins 6, Dodgers 4: Josue De Paula gets first hit, homer, and RBI in breakout game, but pen blows Emmet Sheehan’s gem

After being patient at the plate for over two games, Josue De Paula finally got pitches to hit today and took full advantage of the chance. After walking again his first time up, he proceeded to pummel a three-run homer and follow that up with a double, and that basically was all the offense the Dodgers got. Thankfully, that was seemingly all they needed as Emmet Sheehan was great yet again. However, the pen gave up six runs in the final two innings and the Marlins walked away with the 6-4 win.

While Emmet Sheehan hasn’t had the year he wanted after a breakout 2025, he seems to have regained that form since being recalled. After matching a career-high in strikeouts last time, he twirled a gem this time around as well.

He started out on fire, retiring the first nine batters he faced, but he got a great test in the 4th the second time around. A lead-off single was followed by an unlucky nubber in front of home for another single, but Sheehan remained in control. He got a flyout and strikeout, issued a walk to load the bases, and then got another flyout to escape the jam.

He then resumed dominance, getting the 5th and 6th in order before his day was done.

A bit early, but out with a great feeling: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 81 Pitches.

On the other side, Marlins starter Eury Perez had it working a bit early, only walking Josue De Paula with two down in the 2nd through his first seven batters. He then worked around a lead-off single and balk in the 3rd, only hitting a batter with two down in the frame.

The 4th was the big chance for the Dodgers, and the rookie made sure they took it. A lead-off Will Smith double was followed by a Kyle Tucker walk, and that brought up a hungry JDP looking for his first hit. He fouled off three pitches and took two balls before unloading on a 98 MPH fastball on the inner half for a towering three-run shot for his first hit, first homer, and first RBI in the majors. 3-0 Dodgers.

Perez then got the next three to end the 4th, and faced the minimum in the 5th after erasing a lead-off single with a double play. That was it for him as his pitch count was up near 100.

The 6th saw Jack Ralston enter in relief and giving up only a JDP double with two outs, and Josh Ekness worked around a one-out single and walk in the 7th by getting a double play. Victor Vodnik also got a scoreless 8th, but was pretty lucky to do so. After a one-out walk, Kyle Tucker was robbed of a double on a diving play, and a single followed to corner things but he managed to get the final out.

Looking to look down the lead for Sheehan was the Dodgers pen, and they started with Alex Vesia in the 7th, who cruised through a 1-2-3 frame.

Things weren’t quite that easy in the 8th for Edgardo Henriquez, though not much fault of his own. With one down, a groundball found a hole and also seemed to injure Miguel Rojas, though he thankfully stayed in the game.

An infield “single” followed as Mookie Betts double clutched on a soft grounder to shortstop and suddenly the tying run was at the plate. Henriquez responded with a strikeout, but then issued a walk to load the bases, and gave up an actual single to Otto Lopez to score two. All of a sudden it was just 3-2 Dodgers.

Dave Roberts then turned to Tanner Scott to escape the jam and he did exactly that on three sliders for a strikeout to end the 8th.

Surprisingly, Vodnik was left in and his luck didn’t last in the 9th. With one down, Alex Freeland singled and stole second, then he scored on a Mookie Betts ground-rule double to make it 4-2 Dodgers.

Dax Fulton took over and got the second out, but then hit a batter and issued a walk to load things up before getting out of it.

So it was a two-run lead now and Scott was going for the four-out save. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned, as a grounder to Freddie Freeman was tossed behind Tanner for an infield “single”, a bunt single followed, and then Javier Sanoja hit a jam-shot double down the line in left to tie the game at 4-4.

Brock Stewart then entered and immediately gave up a walk-off homer to Agustin Ramirez.
