Dodgers 3, Giants 1: Bats do enough to back Emmet Sheehan’s 5.1 shutout and 9 K in relief for a sweep

It seems silly to complain about a win, but the Dodgers basically got dominated by Matt Wilkinson, which led to inevitable frustration. Fortunately, Emmet Sheehan pitched well in a quasi-start yet again and bought enough time for the bats to get through against the Giants pen to secure a sweep with a close-fought 3-1 victory.

Always nice to do that to a rival, and it’s four wins in a row and six of their last seven.

The opener for the Dodgers was Jack Dreyer, and he did not have a great start. A lead-off walk was followed by an error on a pick-off attempt and then a steal of third. Victor Bericoto again victimized the Dodgers with a single to make it 1-0 Giants early.

For a while that looked like it might be enough.

As mentioned, Matt Wilkinson was stellar for the Giants, as he gave up just a one-out double in the 2nd, a two-out single in the 4th, and another one-out double in the 5th. That was it through five shutout frames for the big lefty, and he also struck out six.

Fortunately, anybody else took over in the 6th, and Carson Seymour prevented a shutout by giving up Tommy Edman‘s seventh homer of the year to tie things up at 1-1.

In the 7th, Sam Hentges gave up back-to-back one-out singles to Max Muncy and Josue De Paula to corner things, and Enrique Hernandez came through with a double to score Muncy and make it 2-1 Dodgers.

Dylan Smith then entered and got the final two outs without allowing the Dodgers to get insurance. Smith then got one out in the 8th, but gave up a single to Teoscar Hernandez. Trent Harris then entered and gave up a Freddie Freeman single, and with two down Muncy blooped a single into center for an insurance run to make it 3-1 Dodgers.

Back to the Dodgers, Emmet Sheehan then took over in the 2nd and was basically flawless in his bulk appearance. He gave up a two-out walk in the 3rd and a one-out single in the 6th, and got one out in the 7th before exiting.

If it was a start, it would be one of his best on the year: 5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K, 93 Pitches.

Kris Bubic continued to look sharp, as he got the final two outs in the 7th with only a runner reaching due to an error. Brock Stewart continued the run of dominance in the 8th with a pair of strikeouts to get them to the 9th.

For the save, it was Tanner Scott in the 9th, who got a scoreless frame partially thanks to Tommy Edman on defense. He allowed a two-out walk but that was it.

The Dodgers will have the day off tomorrow but will remain at home for a three-game series against the rival Padres starting at 4:10 PM HT/7:10 PM PT/10:10 PM ET on TBS. It’ll be Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the bump against Robbie Ray.
