Dodgers 7, Padres 0: 8 relievers combine on shutout in remix of 2024 NLDS Game 4

Both the Dodgers and Padres got rare tests in the last month against a winning team, and thankfully it was the Dodgers who passed this one. With a pen game against their ace in Michael King, it was the Dodgers who pulled ahead early behind a four-run inning and added on late, while the bullpen game provided a reminder of 2024 NLDS Game 4 in a 7-0 victory as eight of them pitched a shutout.

That’s five wins in a row, a win in seven of the last eight games, and their Magic Number for a bye reduced to one.

As mentioned, the Dodgers got to Michael King early, and he honestly didn’t look right.

He got the side in order in the 1st and then the first two outs in the 2nd, but seemed to lose it there. Teoscar Hernandez and Josue De Paula singled, then he hit Andy Pages (his first plate appearance back, btw) to load things up. Tommy Edman and Mookie Betts then both drew walks to force a pair of runs in, and Freddie Freeman followed with a first-pitch single to plate two more. 4-0 Dodgers before the rally ended.

King got a scoreless 3rd with just a one-out single, but another two-out rally hit in the 4th. Mookie doubled and it was followed by Freddie blooping one in for another run and a 5-0 Dodgers lead.

That was it for King, and Wandy Peralta entered in the 5th, starting with a clean frame. Continuing in the 6th, he gave up a lead-off triple to De Paula with help from a Fernando Tatis Jr. misplay. But then on an Andy Pages shallow fly the required a sliding catch, Dustin Harris got up and was ruled to have thrown De Paula out at home. This despite him being very safe, but the Dodgers were out of challenges, having burned on in the 1st on a pick-off attempt.

No matter, Tommy Edman followed by hitting his 8th of the year to make it 6-0.

Griffin Canning then took over in the 7th for the Padres, giving up Will Smith‘s 10th homer of the year to make it 7-0.

He then finished the Dodgers in the 8th by working around back-to-back one-out walks.

As all this was going on, the Dodgers were rolling along with their pen game.

Brock Stewart started things in the 1st by working around a lead-off single, then Justin Wrobleski had to navigate past a one-out error and a two-out single, but no harm and no foul. Blake Treinen then issued just a two-out walk in the 3rd, and Roki Sasaki returned in the 4th. He got the first two batters before giving up a groundball single and then a soft liner single, but got through the inning unscathed. Looked good.

The 5th belonged to Edwin Diaz, who passed another test, as he should’ve struck out the side. Instead, he didn’t get a call and had to settle for a 1-2-3 frame on a nubber instead.

Kyle Hurt then took over in the 6th, giving up just a two-out single, and he continued in the 7th with a 1-2-3 frame. Alex Vesia was next up in the 8th, issuing a two-out walk but nothing more.

Jack Dreyer then closed the show in the 9th with a clean frame. Easy peasy.

Josue De Paula update corner was fun today, as he went 2-for-3 with a single, a triple, and a walk. He also scored a run and struck out.
