Padres 5, Dodgers 1: Bats leave 12 on base in a lackluster showing

After a dominant win yesterday, the Dodgers struggled to generate offense today, going 1-for-9 with RISP and leaving 12 on base en route to just a single run. Meanwhile, the Padres had a big homer off Yoshinobu Yamamoto and got insurance after defensive struggles later in a 5-1 Dodgers loss.

The five-game win streak is no more.

Padres starter Robbie Ray wasn’t exactly sharp, but the Dodgers didn’t punish him for it either.

He worked around a one-out single in the 1st, then a lead-off hit in the 2nd by Teoscar Hernandez resulted in an out because he inexplicably tried to stretch a single into a double. That hurt more because another single followed and later a two-out stolen base put a runner in scoring position but was left there. That would become a theme, as a two-out walk and single in the 3rd also wasn’t cashed in.

The Dodgers finally got on the board in the 4th, but not in the most inspiring way. An infield single from Teoscar Hernandez was followed by a bloop single from Kyle Tucker and another bloop from Andy Pages to load things up, though it sure looked like Teoscar got thrown out at third due to not getting a good jump. Either way, a shallow fly from Max Muncy did nothing and ended Ray’s day.

David Morgan entered and got Tommy Edman to line out to left to score Teoscar for one run, but then walked Mookie Betts to load the bases again.

Shohei Ohtani then got ahead 3-1, had a walk reversed, and eventually struck out for by far the biggest out of the game.

As you can see, though, the Dodgers were trailing at that point.

On the other end, Yoshinobu Yamamoto started extremely well. After giving up a lead-off single in the 1st (and a two-out steal), he retired nine in a row.

His night turned quickly, as he grazed a uniform for a HBP to start the 4th, then the next pitch was hit out for a homer by Manny Machado

A single followed and a one-out walk was more trouble, but Yamamoto navigated around that. He couldn’t do the same in the 5th, when an infield single was granted when Tommy Edman couldn’t glove a grounder, a swinging bunt led to another infield single, and then on a sac bunt attempt, Yamamoto tried to throw to third but did so wildly for an error to score a run and leave runners at second and third with nobody out.

A Machado sac fly followed to make it 4-1 Padres before he got out of the 5th. He finished his outing with a scoreless 6th, but enough damage was done: 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R (2 ER), 1 BB (1 HBP), 4 K, 88 Pitches.

In relief, Kris Bubic got a scoreless 7th, giving up a lead-off single and hitting a batter with one-out, but getting a double play to end it. Jack Dreyer got a clean frame in the 8th and one out in the 9th before Blake Treinen entered, issued a walk, gave up two stolen bases, and the a single to Freddy Fermin to make it 5-1 Padres. He also allowed a double before finally getting two outs to end the inning.

Meanwhile, the Padres pen continued to work in the 5th, erasing a lead-off walk with a double play and allowing just a single after. A lead-off double was stranded in the 6th, a one-out walk led to nothing in the 7th, same for a one-out single in the 8th, and then got just a two-out walk in the 9th.
