Dodgers 4, Giants 3: Blake Snell’s groin looked great, Enrique Hernandez’s late homer wins it

After a quick affair and relative snoozer yesterday, the Dodgers and Giants made things a bit more exciting today. Blake Snell got through his start seemingly healthy, and the Dodgers took an early lead. However, their offense stalled for a while and the Giants eventually tied things up late, but Enrique Hernandez came up with the game-winning homer for a 4-3 victory.

The main, and perhaps only, story today was the health of Blake Snell’s groin. Fortunately, things looked pretty good.

He gave up a two-out double and infield single in the 1st but escaped damage, then worked around a one-out single and two-out stolen base in the 2nd as well. Snell finally gave up a run on a lead-off double, stolen base, and Turner Hill sac fly for a run in the 3rd.

In the final inning of his planned abbreviated outing, he faced the minimum after a two-out single was thrown out trying to stretch it.

The main thing is the stuff looked fine: 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 77 Pitches.

Giants starter Matt Wilkinson was actually a weirdly good test for the Dodgers since he basically completely shut them down less than a week ago.

After a clean 1st, the Dodgers got just a two-out walk in the 2nd, but Mookie Betts got the Dodgers on the board in the 3rd with his 23rd homer of the year.

Almost mercifully, that was the end of Wilkinson’s day, as Duncan Davitt took over in the 4th. He immediately gave up a lead-off single to Will Smith, a one-out single to Teoscar Hernandez, and another single to Miguel Rojas to plate another run and make it 2-1 Dodgers.

After walking Andy Pages to load the bases, he then tried his best to walk Enrique Hernandez, but he hilarious swung at ball four on a full count for a strikeout.

Tristan Beck then entered and gave up a single to Tommy Edman to drive in another run and make it 3-1 Dodgers before he was able to get out of the jam.

Beck continued in the 5th, giving up a lead-off single and one-out double, but escaping that traffic. Carson Seymour got a clean 6th, Camilo Doval struck out the side in the 7th, and Jason Foley gave up just a one-out walk in the 8th..

So the Dodgers pen had five innings to cover, which basically served as further auditions.

Alex Vesia started by cruising through the 5th with a pair of strikeouts, then Kris Bubic took over in the 6th, who gave up just a two-out single.

Brock Stewart then took over in the 7th and was lucky to escape with the lead. A lead-off walk was advanced to second on a groundout, and Drew Cavanaugh tripled high off the wall in right to cut the Dodgers lead to just 3-2.

Stewart did manage to get out of that with a pop-out and strikeout to end the 7th at least.

Evan Phillips started the 8th by giving up a lead-off double, got a big strikeout, but then uncorked a wild pitch and gave up a sac fly to Bo Davidson on consecutive pitches to tie the game at 3-3.

The tie didn’t last long, as Trent Harris entered for the Giants in the 9th and immediately gave up Enrique Hernandez’s fourth homer to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead.

Tanner Scott then ended the game in the 9th despite giving up a two-out double for a bit of fun.

Blake Treinen might’ve been hurt as well.

The series and season will conclude tomorrow at 9:05 AM HT/12:05 PM PT/3:05 PM ET. The pitching matchup is probably dueling pen games, with the Dodgers holding final tryouts and the Giants having no other option.
